I've got the same challenge with a 1984 633Csi. I really need the rear silence section but I don't care if it is stainless or plain old carbon steel.

If I would buy a complete new stainless system, I would buy a Supersprint.

I have super sprint on my m635, it's louder than stock and now they have factory looking tips.

But the design is good if you can wait for shipping....

If anyone goes the super sprint route and wants the larger tipped muffler I will trade + some cash for the OE style tip muffler.

my thread on the topic.

My exhaust has 6 miles on it.

Have BMW stopped making/selling the OE version, or are you simply thinking that stainless will have a longer life?

I changed system on my car only a few weeks ago (for a new complete OE system that I bought around 6 years ago, but hadn't got round to fitting), but even under close inspection the front section that was replaced (the original from 1988) was still in good shape and totally gas tight. The rear section, that I'd changed around 15 years ago, was in less good shape with considerable corrosion to the outermost layer of metal of the middle and back boxes. But it revealed an under layer that I'm almost certain is stainless. Both sections are now with Wattsmonkey who may be able to shed more light on the actual OE construction.

Hey Ronnie,

I don't know about an exact oe copy in stainless, but the Fritz system makes a great noise! I am in possession of Phil's highline system and whilst it's obviously a different fitting from yours, the construction does inspire faith in the BMW design if you do go for an original. Like all exhaust systems in steel, it will last a lot longer if used regularly so the condensation doesn't build up!

How bad is yours?

Cheers,

Rob

Another thumbs up for the Fritz system; sounds good, doesn't drone, lasts for ever. I put one on my ageing 635 two years ago and will do the same without hesitation when my M635 needs a new exhaust.

Here's what I did.

I bought Ireland Engineering's header and then my friend and I fabricated our own stainless exhaust system for my '86 CSi, from the header back to the tailpipe. The trickiest part was at the firewall, as its the tightest there plus the clearance and geometry. It took a full weekend but everything came out great and the car sounds fantastic.

I actually mocked-up three (3) options on my garage floor and as a side note I did not end up installing Ireland's muffler or resonator but bought a new Magnaflow muffler instead.

This was my preferred option:

Hope this helps.

Hi Guys

Thanks. I don’t like modifications of any kind, I always think that BMW spend a lot of Money on R and D but maybe cut costs somewhat on material in someways.

Thanks

I'm told that the 633 and 635 are configured a bit differently but I don't quite know what is different. Any advice is helpful.
