E12 Based Chassis Ignition Switch Swap

Post by Kurtamine_ »

Hey 6ixers!

I recently have been trying to replace the ignition switch on my e12 based 6ixer and ran into a bit of trouble.

In all of the manuals I read for the e28 and photos from online of e12 steering columns, they all suggest that the ignition switch can be removed from the bottom of the steering column and installed from the bottom too. Me testing that theory didn't prove to be as successful ](*,)

So far I did the following steps:

1.) remove the bottom cover.
2.) remove the safety bolt and tab under the ignition cylinder.
3.) removed the set screw in the ignition cylinder.

Am I missing a step or is there something else I haven't done yet? :-k

Hmm, went through this process eons ago, but I seem to recall needing to remove the top cover as well :-k

It appears that you have the steering column lowered, apparently you were able to get the tamperproof screws out :-?

Unless the P/O did that for you [-o<

Looks like you're close at this point :-"

Yeah it was a real PITA but I removed the tamper proof screws. I honestly did not want to remove them but everything I have read to this point stated that they needed to be removed.
