Royal Purple 20W50 (Hawaii)

Post by KINGJOHN808 »

Aloha all,

My neighbor gave me two cases of Royal Purple Synthetic 20w50. My E24 has approximately 130k miles. Living in Hawaii I have always ran a little thicker oil due to climate, but never did so in this car.

I’ve seen several post for and against a heavy weight oil but a lot of those post are from 2008 up to maybe 2015 so this is manly for the folks that live in a place with similar climate year round. I don’t drive the car much if at all as I’m trying to get it road worthy and trusting that if I take it out for a Sunday drive I can get back home without the aid of a tow truck. :D

20w50 Synthetic good to go, or should I stick with a lower weight?

Mahalo’z.

20W50 is the oil for an M30 engine.

I only use 20W50 but would not put Synthetic in a M30.

Plus 3 on using 20W50 only, but plus 1 on not using synthetic

Maybe in a freshly rebuilt engine :-"

Aloha,

Need a little education on the synthetic and why not you use it in this motor. I’ve never actually used synthetic before, but I was given 2 cases of this stuff and didn’t want it going to waste.

Is it bad because of the age/mileage/type of engine and components?

The M30 was designed long before Synthetic was produced (think about the old gasket technology and machining tolerances back in the '70s and '80s), it was designed to run (even race) on regular dinosaur oil.

While you can use it, be prepared for new leaks, the smaller molecular structure is such that, it will find the path of less resistance and leak.
