What I've used on other cars and parts that are exposed to chemicals or elements is rattle can spray in bed liner. A bit messy, so mask accordingly. Used on the L's gas tank so road debris doesn't tear up the tank. Also makes it easier to clean with a hose when washing/ spraying the undercarriage.

Re: My 6'er Diff Mount

Post by sansouci »

I need to replace the diff mount as previously discussed on this blog. But a few questions for you all. I'm going to put the rear on jackstands and remove the rear tires. I will put a small floor jack under the diff before I remove the bolts. But my concern is whether the diff will drop (but be supported by the jack) or will it need to be pried down to remove and install the new mount.
Anyone with experience in doing this job, please chime in.
Many thanks,
Ken

Ken,

It should be able to come down on the jack.
You may have to wiggle it a little.

Eric,
Thanks for the knowledge on the diff mount.

As to the busted Pitman arm bolt removal (a previous set of pics) I bought 2 left hand taps and two left hand grade 8 bolts from McMaster Carr. Wildly expensive (bolts about $10 each and the taps about $8 plus S&H). a 1/4" and 5/16". If it works, its way cheaper than pulling the swing arm (thanks again to Ralph for selling one to me "just in case")
I will let you know if it works but I figure a grade 8 bolt of these diameters should be more rugged than a brittle easy out of uncertain origin. I think I should also hit it with my MAPP torch and chill it with PB blaster to unfreeze the rust in the threads.

Now that I refurbed my battery tray and the green oxygen tubing is holding up, the discharge from the battery is collected on my Walmart drip tray. The acid ate through the tin coating. A great example of the corrosive power of battery acid.

sansouci wrote: Sun Dec 23, 2018 12:08 am I just received my Cocomats. They are great people to work with. I started with their existing 635 template, but after a few revisions, it fits like a glove. I used the Coco color 06 which is a beige dot on a brown background. The heavy rubber backing should settle in over the summer as the car warms up. I chose to cover the dead pedal and made the rears a little longer to fit under the seat. If you want to use my template, ask Chrissy at Cocomats for my 84 633CSI. They store them digitally which is an awesome advance on the sewing technology.

I have an old driver's side and two rears for anyone who wants to pay the postage. They are a greenish color and the black foam backing is falling apart. But they were OEM and they were real carpeting.

Oh, the car is bronzit and the interior is beige.

Here are some pics:
I'm planning on purchasing some Cocomats for my 88 US M6. I'm curious what revisions you made to their template? You mention the dead pedal and extra length on the rear mats. Anything else? I have some OEM accessory mats now and they seem a little wide - wondering if that was one of your modifications?

Do you have power seats? Not sure of the clearance at the rear of the front seats, so I'm concerned about having room for extended rear mats.

My car is Cinnabar red with a Natur interior. Trying to decide between the red/black checkers or the standard Coco in black with red highlights.

Thanks!

Hi,
As mentioned, I covered the dead pedal on the drivers' side and made the passenger side a little wider. For the rear, I made them longer to fit under the power front seats. If you contact Chrissy at Cocomats, I'm sure she can send you the template for my car. There's no obligation although if you order samples, I think they are $1 each

I returned from my winter in Florida and among the first to-do's is to check on the Garage Queen. Underneath the car in the drip pan was a nice puddle of red ATF. So sometime in the next few days, I will put it up on the ramps and crawl under.
If I need to have it redone are there any reputable shops in the Tri-state area (that's NY, NJ and CT) who can honestly do the work?

Before you panic too much check it hasn't come from the power steer reservoir, which can happen if overfilled and the car not run for a few weeks or more. It will likely run along the chassis rail and drip to ground somewhere around the centre of the cross member.

Following up on the aforementioned trans fluid leak, I drove the car on the homemade 2x10 ramp. In doing so, I misaligned the car and it caused a minor scraping of the undercoating on the D/S rocker panel. My very bad.

So in penance, I reached into the parts bin (AKA the basement) and pulled out a strut brace I bought from BAV Auto. However, it seems that the main holes (not the bolt holes) need a bit of love from a Dremel to fit properly. Anyone else find this problem?

I also found a new set of ignition wires and they seem to show about 5K ohms when I checked them. Is this within spec? They are made by BWD and labeled BMW on the plastic wire loom.

Re: My 6'er Ignition Switch

Post by sansouci »

From JPS635

The spring return was buggered in mine and I couldn't get a definitive answer on what needed replacing so replaced both the switch and the ignition lock barrel (swapped over the cylinder). From memory the spring return is in the switch.

Either way it's not too difficult a job but painful. If no one's been there before you'll have to chisel off the security screws which is just plain awkward and replace with machine screws. Remove the driver seat to make things easier.

To JPS 635
Thanks for the comment that the spring is in the switch and not the lock tumbler. The switch (P/N 61321372931) is about $130 at BMW of South Atlanta , $150.75 at FCP and $211.51 at ECS. But they are available. The lock and key (P/N 32321108976) is Back Ordered with no ETA.
I guess the suggestion to remove the front seat is to give working room on the steering column so that it is a more comfortable job. The best way to remove the security screw is how? With a dremel cut off wheel slicing a slot into the head? Although I do have a 100-piece security screw set from HF which may work.
The Bentley section 22 page 29 has a section on the ignition switch replacement but calls for removing the steering wheel. That seems unnecessary as I've replaced the directional flasher on the column without it.
If it is the key lock (I doubt it) where do I get a replacement tumbler set and can a locksmith set up the new tumbler to accept my old keys (which work the doors and trunk? Is there an exploded view of the lock (I will search on BC afterwards as Bentley doesn't go into that detail).

Thanks Bert (from an old post of his):
"If you have your ignition lock it is not a big deal for a lock smith to re key your other cylinder or any other cylinders to match. Saves the trouble of pulling the ignition switch. I had to replace my door cylinders and re keyed the new cylinders my self."

Wish me luck today.

You got the right idea. See my reply in the other thread mentioning removal of the security screws. The security screw bit set will do you no good, since the screws are completely slotless. Nothing to put a bit into!

Thanks Ken. We will look at this. Dremel to the rescue!
We are also looking at the starter solenoid. RealOEM has two solenoid applications for my car
P/N 12411273228 which applies to a 1.0KW and 1.4KW starter
P/N 12411354579 which applies to a 1.3KW and 1.5KW starter
Since I don't know which starter I have (all are spec'd for a '84 633CSI) which to choose if and when it comes down to replacing it.
I'm not planning on Repair Parts Bingo.
The best prices on solenoids are from GetBMWparts although free shipping only applies above $499. All included I see that I'm better with BMW of South Atlanta,

Re: My 6'er: No Start

Post by sansouci »

So I just met with the tech. The Power Probe told the story that the solenoid is ok, the car starts with a jumper and it is the starter switch, not the tumbler. Next step: online order. But the delivery times seem to be much longer so I went the local route.
While my local stealership is slightly more expensive, regular delivery should be 3 business days with no added delivery charge as I would pick it up at the parts window and then drop it at my tech.
The parts manager at BMW of Southampton, my local stealership showed me an interesting diagram (steering lock/ignition switch) : there is a M3x5 grub screw (P/N 07119904210) that holds the switch in place so that if a metric allen key is available, drilling could be avoided. The fracture bolt which is torque sensitive supposedly holds the tumbler in place.

Re: My 6'er - Starter switch replaced

Post by sansouci »

So after some minor problems, the switch was replaced. I thought the 5 hours of labor including testing and diagnosis was a bit much but it had to be done. My druthers would have been to flat bed the car to my driveway and do it at my leisure. Other minor quibbles was that the tech buggered the hinge on the fuse box (he likely tried to remove it to test the various circuits) but it is still available new for about $30. At first, the windows didn't operate but he reversed two wires and correcting that re-energized the windows.
So I am back to my long list of to-do's. Ironically, my tractor starter failed today so that will be a distraction, but shouldn't take long for Amazon to get me the new part and the installation is quick.

I am still looking for a Long Island-based wrench buddy to tackle the bigger tasks of refreshing the suspension, the A/C rebuild among others. Applications are being willingly accepted!

Why am I seeing 633Csi mufflers from Latvia on eBay? Real or fake? Any clue about the seller. What I really need is the rear silencer section so can I use a rear section from a 635 muffler? Any reasonably good used units out there with you folks?

Re: My 6'er

Post by sansouci »

Today I received my new fuse box/relay cover (P/N 61 31 1 368 802) but it is too snug to latch properly. I swapped the rubber gasket thinking that the new one was too fat (or had not shrunken to the extent that the old one had). But even with the old one in the new plastic cover, it would not latch. The parts guy at the BMW dealership thought that the BMW warehouse would not exchange it, even though I spent $46.22 on it. So for now, I have the old one held by a small zip tie through the eyelet. I am loath to fettle with it such as filing the latch.
Thoughts?
--Ken

P.S. I replaced the starter on my lawn tractor successfully with only very minor trimming of the air shield under the new starter which is about 1/8" longer than the OEM item.

It's been a year since my last post and no progress at all. However we did put a new kitchen in the house and a refresh of the bathrooms.
Back to the challenge at hand. Who posted the best blog on replacing the a/c components: compressor, evaporator, receiver dryer, hoses, etc.? Time to put my parts hoard to good use. How do I take the front apart for the evap and install new electric fans, etc..
Just point me in the right direction as when I do a word search, I get a blizzard of posts.

Hey, I did a complete rebuild in my posts. However, I didn't use stock components, so that may not be exactly the same as you. I tried to upgrade to modern bits that use a r134a refrigerant. You did mention new electric fans so perhaps you are not going stock? I remounted my fan onto a parallel flow condenser. As for the evap, it's removed by dropping it down out of the car. Jack up the front, undo a few screws and hose connections, drop it down. Pretty easy to see once you stare up in there.

Song,
Thanks for the reference to your thread. I'm likely to use a Sanden compressor and a pair of Spal pusher electric fans. I bought an aftermarket cross flow condensor. Should be an upgrade for those moist summer days.
