Alright friends, some progress this week. I fired up the engine last night after 9 weeks, runs beautifully and also took the car around the block to settle-in the new suspension and everything feels great in this first shake down run.

It was great to hear the engine roar to life as well.

This was the engine back in October:


and last night...what an improvement in how it looks, feels and sounds:

Have you considered filling in the holes for the side marker lights in the rear quarters that had to be added when the car was federalized? If so, now's the time to do it.

It's cheating not removing the windscreens and small trim.

No its not, those clips for the trim are EXTREMELY brittle and once disturbed they will break, its not an "IF", its a "WHEN", and they are NLA (as you know).

Same for the glass and seals. There is a very neat method only a few body shops know which is pulling back the rubber with a tensioned string and painting underneath with primer and paint - 2 person job. If there was rust or bubbling, the glass would have been pulled to address this, but this car is 100% rust free as it lived in CA, NV and now TX. Pulling the glass and associated trim, you also run the risk of damaging the flimsy trim and potentially cracking the glass. I discussed ad nauseum with the body shop, what is the most practical approach, so I feel we have a great approach to restore the body and paint.

Yes, your right the plastic broke and the windshield did crack along with the
bent trim that had to be replaced when my 6 was repainted.

My daughters 72 Buick Skylark was painted by the seller with the detail masked
and you can see an edge on everywhere it was masked.

I hope your guy does a better job. Are you keeping the original color?
I'm an original color guy on repainting. Please post photos when it's finished.

Is there some reason the mounting trim clips can't be reproduction via a 3D printer application?

I just bought them from BMW.

Yes I'm keeping the original Fjord Blue which is one of BMW's most striking colors.

We have paint!
Fjord Blue is an incredible color.

Like the colour.
It's shines brightly!

Most of the re-assembly is now done.
New lights, new lens, replaced tail lights as well.
Replaced some of the trim as well.

Last night, I removed both front seats and finally fixed the reclining mechanism on both sides - the connection bar under the seat had come loose from the mechanism and needed to be re-attached and locked back in place- best part no cost in parts just a few hours of time. So now they both recline with the side handle like they are supposed do. Smaller maintenance items like this really go a long way in enjoying the car and making things right.

My Sunday project and this only applies to the 1981 and older cars.

When I bought my car a few years ago I noticed the plastic chrome beauty or trim rings around the inside door handle were completely disintegrated, the small top oval ring...more than 50% was missing.

While I have a good quality 3D printer, I decided to make a replacement set out of 3-mm thick aluminum. As my plastic set was so badly deteriorated, I did not really have a good template, so mostly this was done by "eye-ball". After cutting and shaping the aluminum I polished it, drilled the holes and fitted everything.

Everything screwed in perfectly and looks good. As I do not have a bead roller I was not able to perfectly copy the factory pieces and add a bead to the edge. But overall I am pleased and really adds to the interior.

I love making stuff, so this type of "work" is hardly "work".

I decided to remove the 16" Mille Miglia 5 spokes and install a set of rare 2-piece 16" Enkei 16" wheels, that weigh 12-lbs each and new Falken tires (205/50 Front and 225/50 Rear). Then it was off for an alignment as all the front suspension is brand new. The car tracks perfectly straight and drives so well, it was a hit at the alignment shop too.

There was a discussion on the Facebook E24 Group, some members / owners were thinking a percentage of early cars got the E9 Roundel treatment others were thinking it was an add-on by a previous owner. After a bit of deliberation, I think it was the latter and a previous owner added it on. They are genuine E9 Roundels and I think it actually looks really cool on the car.
