Finally no more sloppy or vague shifts.
Short shift kit - finally installed.
Including:
1) All new Delrin bushings (from Ireland Engineering)
2) New Stainless steel dual sheer selector rod (from Ireland Engineering)
3) New pins & clips (from Ireland Engineering)
4) New Shift lever (from Ireland Engineering)
5) New Selector Rod Joint ((from Ireland Engineering))
6) Shift knob and boot (eBay vendors)
7) New Stainless Shifter Arm Bracket with Polyurethane bushing (from Turner Motorsports)
8) New rubber dust insulation boot (from the BMW dealer)

Nice work Yasin. Please educate me

The aluminum shift “console”, the part holding everything together and the shifter pops into, is that a factory part on your car? I’m under the impression your car should have the sheet metal console as with the early cars. The aluminum was not used until 86 in the non-M cars.

Also, what transmission is installed in your car? Thanks

Thanks Ralph.

The "Console" that you are referring to is what BMW calls the "Shifting Arm", and "yes" it is original to my car. My car's born in date is Feb. 1984, and these aluminum shifting arms were used in the E24 from Oct. 1983

The trans in my car is the original Getrag.

Thanks Yasin. Researched the part number shown in the pic and realoem says e24 from 77. I know the sheet metal shift arm console was used until 85.

I’ve been converting early sheet metal to the newer aluminum part as the shift action is much more precise. I was cutting and welding later aluminum to size. When used with the 265 OD trans, the shift arm is about 7 inches long. C242 mm equates to just under 9 inches so I wanted to know which specific getrag trans you have. I thought the M cars all had the 280 but I have only my limited knowledge as to which exactly. I’ve never seen a 265 trans with the gate to place the aluminum arm into. That’s usually in the 260/6 trans. I have zero knowledge about the 280.

I also found that the shift rod joint with the wider slot as you show has an out of round hole when new. That creates a lot of slop in the shifter. Thanks

Ralph - On my '86 635CSi that aluminum shifter arm measures 190mm. On this '84 M635 the arm is 147mm long. I also rebuilt the shifter on the '79 Euro that I sold on BaT, but in my haste forgot to take really photograph everything I did.

Finally finished the stainless mandrel exhaust on my car, total fab. time was 2-days. The entire system weighs 25-lbs, versus the OEM system which weighs approx. 96-lbs. All V-band connections and custom mounts. I used the Supersprint resonator and mid pipes as they are nicely made. Sounds great as well. Credit goes to my good friend Blake, who is an incredible welder \ fabricator.

Note: I hate how nasty everything looks under the car and the chassis in general...time to clean up this ole girl and it make it sparkle. I think next, I'll remove the entire rear end, replace all the bushings, rebuild the CV axles, powder coat and paint.

Asking for a fellow "silent" member that is in need of an exhaust for his and doesn't want to go OEM, he would prefer stainless [-(

It is nice and loud, I like my cars with personality. It sounds mean at idle and straight pissed off at red-line...laughing!

The mid pipes and resonator are the standard Supersprint..that is correct, everything after that was fabbed by a good friend of mine.

I forgot to add a picture of the driveshaft that I rebuilt along the way as well.
Repainted it and installed a new center support bearing, clamp ring, dust boot and splined center coupling plus a new Guibo

I had some time yesterday morning to remove the driver's side (manual) Recaro.

The seat bottom has a split and also some chunks missing in the leather, so I am going to have the entire piece recovered and re-stitched.

This was the first time I took a Recaro seat apart....it was quite simple!

Yasin, I noticed on the "before" pix of the guibo that the 6X mounting bolts were all going in the same direction, which is not correct [-X

Did you alternate the direction of the bolts as specified when you reinstalled [-o<

I'm sure I have a scan out of the "Big Blue Book" somewhere :roll:

Bob - You can blame the previous mechanic for that...interestingly it looks like the driveshaft has never been removed - who knows. You are correct BMW does recommend the bolts are alternately installed in their orientation.

May I ask your method to clean the body-color areas of the compartment such as the forward bulkhead holding the radiator? Just a cloth and a cleanser? If so, which cleanser?

A question for the group regarding the guibo fastener orientation (since I am challenged understanding the written word...):

Does the bolt head:
1. Always seat against the driveshaft and transmission?
2. Always seat against the guibo?
3. Alternate between the guibo and driveshaft/transmission. If so, on which does the bolt head seat?

Thanks so much Scott!
To clean the bulkhead I used Meguiars polish, I start with their medium compound to get rid of the heavy stuff and then a fine polish to make it really stand out. Its amazing how old neglected paint can bounce back.

I will upload a picture from realoem that shows the bolt orientation, but in summary it is an alternate configuration.

I can be the king of falling into rabbit holes.

What started off as a simple, let me change a blown bulb turned into an evening of painting....seriously! But I found some cancer that I was able to fix and cure. Every single E24 that I have owned has had rust under those tail-lights, amazing, and none of my cars have lived in the rust-snow belt.
