Instrument and heater controls lights out, speaker question

Post by Chzman »

I was driving to work the other day and it is dark still, and I have no instrument or heater control lights on the dash working. The last time the dash was apart by our best BMW mechanic, he assured me all parts were plugged in. I have no reason to doubt him, I have had him as our mechanic for 30+ years, and I trust him. Any ideas on what I might check? I am going to replace the odometer gears in the next week or two, so I was going to replace all the bulbs anyway.

Which is a question I have: What are the specs on the bulbs for all the instrumentation on the car? Haven't found out what I need to replace the bulbs, maybe it is here on the forum, but I have not found it yet.

Also a question on speakers: What is the max depth of rear and front speakers to get as replacements? Bran dis not terribly important, but I would like to buy the replacements once!

Thanks for the input...
Thanks,

Chuck Jenkins

My first thought is the dimmer (potentiometer) inside the light switch. It can be bad or dirty.

Does the 89 have the speakers on the rear deck storage compartment sides? If so, rear depth is around 45 MM and pretty tight. Most 4x6 speakers will not fit as they are to deep. Front has more room so depth is not as big an issue.

I went with Kickers https://www.kicker.com/ in the front and Retrosounds https://www.retromanufacturing.com/ in the rear.
The Retrosounds fit perfectly in the side speaker cutouts in the rear. The Kickers fit up front but i had to mount them behind the carpet and while the original grills fit it isn't a perfect fit. Retrosounds would fit there as well.

Sound is decent, pretty much like stock.

Yes, on the package shelf.

My issue is I do not know how to get the covers off?? Pry them or do they unbolt from below?
I looked and did not see any bolts protruding through the package shelf in the trunk. Just do not want to damage anything I cannot replace.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Sorry, can't help there as my 85 has a hinged storage compartment with speakers on the side. Very different layout and speakers in the back.

Not sure if this will help or apply to your situation. Pictures of my 1988 US M6 rear speaker enclosure and mounting.

The enclosure is held on with two studs/nuts. You need to remove the rear seat to access.

The previous owner of my vehicle replaced the speakers with MB Quart speakers that had a crossover - yours will likely just have a single speaker lead in the speaker "pocket". You can see at the bottom of the following picture two holes where the studs go.

Hope this helps.

Found a picture of the area behind the rear seat that shows the speaker mount.
