Series 1 central vs left side exhaust exit
When was it changed from left side exhaust exit to central exhaust exit on series 1 E24?

What, I just thought I found it on realoem that there was a change 09/79. Are you sure you have the original rear bumper? Do you have 2 or three silencer? Do you have a mid part support for the exhaust system. Left side exhaust exit as far as I have learnt has two silencer and central exhaust exit 3 silencer. And yes I am referring to Euro model.

Re: Series 1 central vs left side exhaust exit
I don't have an original exhaust system but that is neither here nor there. The valance is very clearly made( stamped) for left exhaust not center and it looks great that way. I am running a Billy Boat system. Two separate resonators into one muffler and 2 pipes out 2" from manifold through resonators to muffler and out, the tips are 2.5" diagonally sliced
As to the rear bumper, it is original as it is the short sides not the wrap around as on the later chassis cars. My car was basically all there when I bought and hadn't been molested

Ok, the question is when series 1 E24 with short rear bumper got the central exhaust exit?bpoliakoff wrote: ↑Mon Sep 28, 2020 8:05 pm I don't have an original exhaust system but that is neither here nor there. Re: Series 1 central vs left side exhaust exit
This got me thinking, so I went out to look at my E24s.
The earliest one I currently own is a late S1 (02/82). This has the exhaust cut-out just to the left -about 1"- of the centre line. In that I mean the nearest-to-centre edge of the cut-out is located there. All my other cars have the cut-out about 1" to the right of the centre line. So none actually centred, but not "way off" to the left or right either!

Boot ( trunk ) floor with spare wheel and petrol tank would prevent it being routed other than centre.

Re: Series 1 central vs left side exhaust exit
I thought all Euro series one 635s and 633s got the left of center exhaust. With the pipes actually pointing to left.
Just as a curious note, Pod, how many e24s do you have and which ones? I'd be interested to see pics. Maybe a different post? Sorry to infringe on this post

Re: Series 1 central vs left side exhaust exit
I am not going to admit how many series-one cars we currently have at our family shop. However, I can confirm that the Euro cars have their exhaust tips shifted left of center and US cars have them centered. Both US car and Euro car exhaust tips are pointed straight back in their original form.

Re: Series 1 central vs left side exhaust exit
Its not real obvious but these exhaust tips point to the left by quite a bit. My 79 Euro has this and I just installed the same exhaust in my NA 530i

Re: Series 1 central vs left side exhaust exit
I stand corrected ....
My S1 exhaust does sweep to the left upon exit from the silencer .

Re: Series 1 central vs left side exhaust exit
I don't have my car close by for a picture, my euro is cut noticeably left of center. i have a Billy Boat exhaust system and the tail pipes sweep very very far left and look major neat. Unfortunately the system is out of the car and the car isn't close by so no pics.

Don, Your car looks very very nice from the back. It looks brand new. Is that an OEM exhaust or aftermarket? As I said above I was thinking that all Series one cars had the exhaust ends that swept to the left. I mean to say the tips actually point to the left.
Hows the swap coming along?

Re: Series 1 central vs left side exhaust exit
Bert is this the exhaust you have? It doesn't look like it would put the tips in the right spot for a series 1 car?bpoliakoff wrote: ↑Tue Dec 01, 2020 11:16 pm I don't have my car close by for a picture, my euro is cut noticeably left of center. i have a Billy Boat exhaust system and the tail pipes sweep very very far left and look major neat. I had the exhaust off the car when I restored it . I cannot find a photo of it when off but there was a brand stamping on the silencers . One piece though so it's complete from front to rear .....
I do recall a substantial invoice for a new exhaust in the service history that came with the car so whether it was OE BMW or not it was fitted by the MD.
edit , found this .

Don, Mmm ok thx for posting that. It doesn't look obviously aftermarket to me but it also doesn't have the roundel stamped in it. Not sure. Again, that car looks very nice and clean.
