Well, while working on my front side marker lighting upgrade, removing the front/side bumper covers was required
And what did I find, RUST
Turns out that these covers actually have a steel sheetmetal plate inside them, and the coating slowly gives way, permitting water to seep in
The drivers (left hand) side wasn't "too" bad, but the right hand side is a mess
Here's a couple of pix, the "before" version, as it were
I will be cleaning up the rust as best as possible, followed by a liberal coating of POR-15 to stop the bleeding
Alternatively, I may see if I can find another pair, doubt that they are still available new, but will check our parts guys, Ralph in SoCal comes to mind
Ron was right, they are rustier than you thought :(

Here's a shot of my "rust repair", which entailed removing as much of the rust as possible and coating with POR-15

Newbie question, but what is that black stuff that you used and how did you clean it before using the black stuff?

POR-15, as noted aboveNewbie question, but what is that black stuff that you used and how did you clean it before using the black stuff?
The nice thing about this stuff is that you really don't need to remove all of the rust
There are 3 steps, cleaning, pretreatment and then the final coating
If you purchase, get the kit, which includes everything you need, and it does come in different colors

Now that you've treated the inside, what is the plan for the exterior? I'm thinking of SEM Trim Black Matte. I think I will use it on plastic parts in the engine compartment such as the air cleaner box cover. There are 4 related products from SEM: SEM Soap, SEM Plastic Prep, SEM Adhesion Promoter and finally the SEM Trim Black Matte. The box has a pebble finish and I don't want to lose it by being too aggressive in the prep stage.
Advice is welcome.

Hey Ken, in the past I've actually been using tire gel on the black plastic trim pieces, but it's messy and sticky
But I do have something new that I have yet to try called "Solution Finish Black Trim Restorer", suggested by an attendee at PSF last year from Oregon
He actually trailered his 6er to the event, but it was spectacular
My trim doesn't exactly need "restoring", but we'll see, sooner than later, as it's show time
