My new 85 Shark
Just bought an 85. Guy was second owner and had it nearly 30 years. No rust other than a few surface spots where paint scratched, hood needs repainting but it appears well maintained as guy had records going back years. Some issues such as ABS light comes on but I am working to sort them out.
My first BMW was a 77 320i and became temporarily bimmerless when a tree fell on my 07 325i. I was looking for a e30 iS when I came acrooss this 635 and pulled the trigger.

Sometimes I feel like a lapsed AA (Automobiles Anonymous) member; after selling my daughter's 325i was without a BMW for the first time since 1978. I managed to go 5 weeks sane before I relapsed...
I'm sure I will have many. I've been browsing them for tips when I was looking at the car. Great community.Looks like a solid car. We will look forward to additional posts from you as you get better acquainted with it.

One question: The buyer didn't know what type of wheels are on it, they're not the originals (thankfully) but 15 inch BMW wheels. I am looking for a spare to replace the original TRX spare; whose tire I wouldn't trust as a tire swing, let alone drive on since I'm guessing it is from 85. Haven't checked date code. I had a steel spare for the 325i and would be fine with that for the CSi if I can't find a decent matching rim.

Congratulations on the "new" 635! I'm glad to see another GA e24 fan - welcome to the Club.
I'd search around on eBay, the mye28.com board or here for a good spare wheel. Lots of nice 16" wheels available and those would be a good upgrade for your car.
Have fun!

Here's what you need. In Atlanta, too. Terrific deal for good Hartge wheels, IMO.

Re: My new 85 Shark
Thanks. Been a BMW fan since 78 and always liked the Shark, so I pulled the trigger when one came up at a reasonable price. Looking forward to brining it to Peachtree chapter events.gray635 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 07, 2020 1:22 pm Congratulations on the "new" 635! I'm glad to see another GA e24 fan - welcome to the Club.

Thanks. They're nice and certainly priced right, but right now my $$ are going to painting the hood, fixing the driver seat, completing the tool kit, and other minor things.gray635 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2020 3:38 am Here's what you need. In Atlanta, too. Terrific deal for good Hartge wheels, IMO.

Plus, I like the wheels on it, they were one of my favorite BMW designs, along with the bottle caps on my long gone e30. They have a period look and aren't TRX's. I checked the spare appears to be the original wheel and Michelin tire.
I've found out the car was is a March 85 built in Spartanburg and was a tourist model, which makes sense because the original owner was a German pilot temporarily residing in the US. That may explain the front valence and lack of a spoiler. Otherwise, it has some nice options:
209 Limited Slip Differential (25%)
290 Lt/aly Wheels Star Spoke 44 (Gone and not missed)
459 Seat Adjustm., Electr. W. Memory
481 Sport Seats F Driver/front Passenger
551 OBC with remote (Haven't read the owner's manual , although I have it, but I think this is the stalk control)
708 Leather M Sport Steering Wheel
835 Tourist Version (I'm guessing that was the US equivalent of European delive y of an export version?)

Re: My new 85 Shark
I dibn't know that any 635CSi's were "built" in the US. My June 1985 example came out of the US. Could it have been assembled in the US also? How would anyone find that out?

Re: My new 85 Shark
According to the VIN decoder my E24 was build in Spartanburg, USA as well.
But to be honest I doubt that very much.
The reason for this is that the Laufzettel (production print out) which can be found under the back seats is in German and the sticker in the door clearly mentions "Made in Germany".

Gentlemen, that would be Spartanburg Germany--not Spartanburg SC.

Re: My new 85 Shark
There is to my knowledge no Spartanburg in Germany. It must be SC as there is also a BMW plant in Spartanburg SC.
It also says USA in the VIN decoder, which I think is incorrect.

Re: My new 85 Shark
Yea, BMW didn’t start making cars in Spartanburg until 1994 with the e36 and e36 based Z3. I found it odd that the VIN decoder returns Spartanburg not Dingolfing.

Re: My new 85 Shark
And I have yet to see an E36 built in the Spartanburg, SC plant. As far as I can determine all E36s were built in Germany. I wonder where that bit of information came from? Jlc, did you read that somewhere or know it for a fact? I have two 1995 E36s, a 318is and an M3. Both were built in Germany.

I recalled that from when the plant opened, but double checked some sources:hornhospital wrote: ↑Tue Nov 10, 2020 10:30 pm And I have yet to see an E36 built in the Spartanburg, SC plant. https://bimmerlife.com/2020/06/13/spart ... threshold/. Scroll down to picture of first car built at Spartanburg, a white 318i. My 07 e90 was from SA and my daughter's was from Germany.

Pretty amazing that the US produces more BMWs that anywhere else; a far cry from when Max Hoffman first brought a strange little boxy sedan that drove like crazy.

Sometines PO do styrange things. The sunroof liner came loose, and the PO didn't wangt the sunroof to move and jam. I've decided to fix it and went to open t. No motion. Looked at fuse, all ok. Opend crank and looked around and found out someone had siconnected the switch. It sure stops it from working but why not just pull a fuse? It doesn't have heated seats as far as I can tell so one fuse kills it.
Rec onnected and it works fine, plus no rust by drains.
