Alternative Front Seats - Later E24 (1987)

Post by weejangus »

Hi Guys,

I was just wondering if there are any other front seats that will bolt straight into a later E24 - Euro 1987 635csi.

I currently have what I believe to be sport seats however the drivers seat struggles to stay in the upright position. Put a little pressure on it and it drops.

I fully intend to keep the car original and I will be getting the seat removed, inspected, and repaired. But just wanted to see if there are cheap alternatives that I can source and stick in the car until I get them sorted.

The cars going away for a full respray next month so would be ideal time to sort the seats out too!

I'll (try to) attach a photo of the interior as it is just now...

I would buy a E24 comfort seat for the time being, these are not expensive and a direct fit.

My car had the discomfort seats. I found a set of those manual sport seats and they are much better. I'd pull the offending seat when the car goes for paint and see about fixing it.

Moved the passenger side seat to drivers side as a temporary measure for the respray duration. Get the drivers side repaired.

I've got a pair of black comfort seats in the project car right now as a temporary measure while I sort out the Recaros - they are cheap and chunky!

Ah great, that's good to hear. I'll do a search and see if I can find a "how 2" guide or something. Thanks, I was hoping it would be something simple.

Uh, chunky :-k

I've heard "comfort" seats called a lot of things, but chunky wasn't one of them :-?

Depending on problem not that easy a fix.
Mine did same.
Reclining arm gear teeth break after shock goes out then seat back just slams into position eventually fatiguing teeth which break, hopefully not while driving. Mine did, [-o< What a surprise.
Doable but not that simple.
Some have a spring which also eventually fatigue n seatback slams back into position ,same result.
It might hold in upright position depending on where tooth broke, but slightest pressure n down it goes!

I didn't realize that manual recliners are more difficult to
fix than those motorized.

Your problem ,if like mine , which it sounds like is, is not in any of the motors but in the mechanical hinge ,like link below which they all have of one sort or another whether electric or manual. The teeth are not visible in any of these pics but they are there between the arm n base. I ended up purchasing a used sport seat ,which I still have, to get the part .

Your signature says 86 so should be here, #1( I also have a 86 with sports)

I have Manual e30 sport seats.

They are a bit narrower than e24 seats but they look nice in the car.

They don't bolt straight in but the bolts are parallel so a super simple adapter is all you need to make one side reach.

Yes. You can see the seat back release lever right by the seatbelt buckle. In fact, the belt is hanging on the actual lever.

Yes the seats fold.

I think the convertible ones would match better with the horizontal stitching, but these were free.

I love the armrests added to the seats - they look perfect.

I had mine redone in leather to match the interior.
I know it's not a perfect match, but I'm colorblind and
it looks good to me.

Thanks!
Got the bracket off a guy on R3v. Don't think he makes them anymore but it bolted on to the seatbelt bolt so that you don't have to damage the seats.

The arm rests are actually e34 ones because they have better mechanisum

One of my favorite mods because it feels like my e28 that I used to have.

That looks good, too. Have been looking into this for a while - have a scheme to add the armrest from a Jaguar X-Type, definitely on the to do list.

I have seen the E34 armrests in E30's and E28's. There are adapters available to make them fit.
