Replacement transmission for a 84 628 Ljet

Post by smashervt »

Hey everyone. So I’ve been ordering parts to fix my transmission 5 speed and I think I might have to go the way of the used tranny. My issue is that I read motronic transmissions are different from Ljet and I’d like them to work. I believe I have a getrag 260 vin number WBAEA710508151229

The only two differences are the ones from a Motronic car have a provision for the reference sensors which you don't have to use. The other difference is if the trans is out of a later car it won't have a mechanical speedo drive. However, you can switch yours into it very easily. If you pull the tail shaft housing off your present one, you will see the gear which slides right off the shaft and will go onto the newer gear box. Best bet is to find a trans with a removable bell housing and it will be plug and play and be right for sure. It has nothing to do with the Ljet

When I did my 5 speed swap, the tranny howled like a banshee. I found out how difficult
it is to get some parts and the bearings used where not a great design.

I wound up buying from Metric Mechanic. Jim explained his rebuilding process with
the modifications to enhance performance. He builds trannys for the BMW endurance racers.

If you plan on keeping the car for any length of time, consider a MM box.
