Center console surround removal procedure?

Post by GRNSHRK »

Well, as you can see, some of the interior parts have turned rather yellow after 41 years and are no longer beige :-?

I need to remove the center console plastic surround so that I can respray it, but cannot find any info on how to remove it :-k

Please advise if you know or can point me in the right direction [-o<

I was also thinking about spraying it while still installed, but I really don't think that's a very good idea [-X

As always, TIA

You may as well spray it where it is. I rebuilt mine recently with plywood, as the original particle board sides were falling apart. The back 3" is molded urethane as it rounds the corner. It's stapled to the particle board sides, so it's not coming off without rebuilding the sides.

Screws under the ashtray insert and a couple under the shift boot. Also a screw on each side at the very front bottom. Take off the shift knob to let it clear easier when pulling out.

OK, so if I read this correctly, the whole thing comes out WITH the carpet attached :-?

Sheesh, not what I was expecting ](*,)

Sounding more like redying it in place, but not spray it, use a foam brush or something like that :-"

I think you could get a 9'x12' light visqueen dropcloth at lowes or home depot. Drape the whole interior, cut and tape to expose console, and spray it.
I haven't been satisfied with attempts to brush vinyl paint.

Well, I wound up redying it still installed [-(

I am very pleased with the results

Using the foam brush was the trick, although spraying would have been better

Here's a couple of shots, including while I have most everything removed from the dash, in part to hopefully sort out my charging system issues, and correct some of the "custom" wiring, not sure who did some of this, since I've owned this 6er for over 31 years :-"

And you can see by looking at the color of the glove box that I'm not quite done [-X

When does it ever end :-?

We are fine, thanks for asking. A little wind (45-50 mph) for a few hours, and TONS of rain. Actually a lot less severe than I expected for being on the E/NE side of the storm. We are already close to our yearly rainfall total, with the normally wet months of October and November yet to come. Sure would like to donate some of this rain to the west coast!

What brand of dye did you use?
Did you use an adhesion promoter?

Thanks!

I used Leatherique products, just basically cleaned all of the parts that are plastic, and seems to adhere pretty good, so far [-o<

When I bought new front seats eons ago, I bought this kit so that I could match the new leather, as it's almost impossible to match pearl beige :-"

That indeed must be great :D. Would be nice to have more time, still quite some years to go...

Please share some pics of the result when you are ready.

The gauge kit came from the famed Hardy & Beck (H&B) in Berkeley, CA =D>

Thanks again gents, looking forward to more comments at PSF, with in-person viewing [-o<
