Headliner replacement

Post by SixerNick »

I’m debating between doing some cos Eric restoration on my 1983 633 CSI or replacing it with a 635. The car does need a headliner. I aware that their is a board over part of the headliner and it may be damaged. If that is the case, can I easily replace it? Probably not easy to ship? I would have a shop replace the headliner. The car is a sun roof car.

To do it right front and rear windshields have to come out as well as the rain gutter trim

it is not an easy project to do. the glass and seals have to be removed.

I actually painted my headliner black with great success recently.

I removed all the seats and masked off the entire car.

Then I just used duplicolor fabric/vinyl spray to paint the entire thing. I think I did 2 coats, it covers pretty well. wear a respirator and googles or a full face one, this stuff is strong!

it gives it a slightly stiffer texture but it seems to have shrunken the headliner a bit which had the bonus effect of tightening it up sightly.

it was a bold play, but I saw a couple people do it with good success so I figured it would look better than the stained OEM one. turned out great and looks brand new honestly.

Impressed. Agree a very bold move.

What about replacing the board behind the liner if it is bad?

I think he means the fiber board header that fits over the liner and buts against the windshield

even that part is hard to remove! I had to create a 3d printed part that screws into the relay mount for the motor to pull the sag out of mine.

the people that designed the headliner were not thinking about us.
