HVAC panel question
Hello,
I have a Euro 1980 635 and am attempting to "un-federalize" it as much as possible. The HVAC panel had been swapped out for one in English, and I have located one in German that I would like to swap back in. My question is, the current panel has a digital clock, and the one I'm looking at has an analog clock. Are these two clocks a direct swap for each other? Both physically and electrically?

I believe the digital clock is in the later E28 based chassis, and analog in the earlier E12 based. I've never seen a late 6 with analog.

Thanks for chiming in! I think they made digital first available in late 79. My 80 E12 based 6er has a round digital clock. The panel I found has the analog clock and was just curious if it was a direct fit. I believe you are correct that E28 based cars were digital only.

Really? Thanks for the history lesson. My guess then, is your analog and digital could be interchangeable. It seems unlikely they made big changes to the car side of things, just to the panel itself. My opinion is worth just what you paid for it naturally

I'm interested in this as well, as I want to go backward and exchange my digital clock for an analog version, which I think would be more proper in appearance and function
I do have a replacement analog clock but haven't pursued this yet
But my guess is that all the clocks need is power to run all the time and power to the backlight
Oh wait, I don't think the digital clock is backlit, so that may require some custom wiring
But hey, since I installed a gauge package, I'm sure I can tap in somewhere for the backlighting issue

It would be an interesting comparison of ETMs with both clocks. If anyone has one for both years and sends/posts the appropriate pages I'll be happy to review them and see if they tell us anything.

I’m in the process of doing this swap on my 81 e12. It is not plug and play but the modification is simple. Analog clock needs +12V power, ground lead and dash light lead. The digital clock has 4 wires in the connector so I expect the fourth to be an Ignition On signal lead.
The analog clock mounting is also 2-3 mm shorter than the digital clock so there’s a small gap where the clock ends before the speed control dial.
The analog clock is easy to test as you simply need to connect to a battery and see if it keeps time current.

The busy pic shows a circlip that's a little difficult to remove. The 6 circlips hold sections together that distribute the lighting to the different areas. Takes an angled pick to remove them slowly to prevent breaking the plastic posts. I disassembled the entire panel to clean the lighting distribution.
The wire clip holding down the green dial activator is easy to remove.
Notice the replacement microswitch mounting. Originally long skinny rivets that are destroyed on removal.

Any tips on getting the panel out? I saw the linked article that said "remove the four facia plate screws", but I only see the two towards the driver side. I took those out and it still seems firmly held by something on the passenger side.

I'm working an E12 so it's different. Mine has 2 screws at the top holding the panel in place. I can't remember the e24 mounting as it’s been a few years.
Best to wait for advice or research more so that you don't break anything. Good luck

Figured it out. Not only do the two large screws that I see on the driver side hold it on, but the two small screws on the passenger side that hold the lever mechanism to the fascia also hold the whole assembly to the dash.

I think there are screws behind the vent sliders as well that need to come out
