1988 M6 Engine Air Intake Filter Change Procedure

Post by Sbeaud »

Wondering if someone with a M6 can tell me the procedure to replace the engine air filter. I know - sounds simple.

I'm in the process of hacking together the intake system (since my M6 did not have it when purchased) and I'm not sure once it is complete exactly how it is removed/installed.

The 1988 M6 seems to have a unique one-year-only intake system that consists of a headlamp cover, cast aluminum elbow cover (though I have seen a picture of what appears to be a plastic injection molded version, but this is not typical), and an airbox cover.

I have purchased a used elbow, but can't seem to find a headlamp cover. So I'm trying to cobble one together using a non-M version. If anyone has a lead on one please let me know! \:D/

I'm in the process of cutting the clearance and trying to secure the elbow to the headlamp cover. As I'm test fitting I'm not sure how the assembly is supposed to go together/come apart. If the elbow is screwed into the headlamp cover it becomes an assembly that can't be disassembled without removing it. The elbow is inserted into the airbox cover when installed. There isn't a lot of room for parts to move around for disassembly for air filter replacement. To remove the airbox cover is the elbow/headlamp cover assembly just pushed forward in car ("bending" the headlamp cover)?

So the process:
1. Unclip the airbox cover (4 clips)
2. Push forward the elbow/headlamp cover - bend it - enough to allow clearance for the airbox cover to be removed
3. replace filter
4. Reassemble.

Any insights/personal experience from an M6 owner is appreciated!

Thanks

Scott
