Re: Part # to stop leakage under driver's carpet?

Hi Greg, Those water deflectors are very rare. I’ve only ever had one out of 20+ E24s I’ve owned over the years. IMO, the reason for your leak is the hole through the firewall which takes the main wiring harness. The sealant often dries out and allows water through. Re-seal it and it should fix you...

Re: 628csi Igntion system queries

I think it might be advisable to also look at the distributor cap and in particular the rotor arm. Although I've not personally encountered any issues, I've read many times that these items are very sensitive to being in good condition, and that even brand new aftermarket versions are pretty much a ...

Re: Intermittent idle issue

Okay, as a guy who has ever only worked on busted up American cars, I had to do a YouTube search to even identify the part, but I found a video explaining the cleaning process, and it has worked. Marginally...so I think a proper tune up is in order. :) Thank you so very kindly. Did you clean the in...

Re: Intermittent idle issue

On the face of it I'd be thinking there might be a split/leaking hose that feeds the idle control valve. Failing that, maybe the control valve itself has developed a problem. Or the only other thing I can think of is that the main throttle butterfly isn't quite set right eg closing fractionally too ...

Re: Engine oil temperature

As long as you're confident that the oil temp reading is accurate, I would personally be a bit concerned. That might be because I'm more familiar with big power (700+bhp) Mitsubishi Evos where anything above 90 C would start to get my tuner pretty agitated, but as high as 125 C in a fairly regular m...

Re: Bosch Idle Control Valve discontinued, any valid alternatives?

I'm afraid I have very little idea what it is about these units that cause them not perform correctly, other perhaps than a suggestion I recall from years back saying it was a good idea to flush them through from time to time to remove any build up of dirt etc internally. The same units were fitted ...

Re: Engine oil temperature

Might it be possible that the high viscosity oil is partly to blame for high oil temps ie because it flows around the engine more slowly than would a 40 or 50? Are water temps staying within reasonable bounds?

Any thoughts on the structural integrity of the wheel if material was to be removed?

Re: TRX Tires Not So Bad

This thread reminds of when I was chatting to some rally guy on holiday in Tenerife some 20 odd years ago who told me that in order to get round exorbitant cost (even back then) and limited choice of TRX tyres he would machine 415 TRX rims to take a 16" tyre!! I asked the obvious question regar...

Re: stuck door!

In the latest pic posted up by Brucey (good find btw) isn't the lock heater actuated by lifting the door handle? I'm trying to explain (to myself) why there are two rectangular blocks, both with micro-switches. Is there a second heater unit of some kind? The metal parts on the end of the lock barrel...

Re: Uneven front tyre wear

What kind of static camber and toe settings are on the car right now. And are they within the OE spec range? If in doubt it's rarely, if ever, a bad thing to set toe at zero. Excessive negative camber can, as already mentioned, give rise to bad tyre wear, but what does "excessive" amount t...

Re: stuck door!

I think it was quite a bit longer ago than 16 years since I was messing about with a driver's door lock (when in the process of removing the outer handle to replace the rubber gater)! My car is a late '87 build Highline and I'm pretty sure there were metal rather than nylon items attached to the loc...

Re: driveshaft

I'm not aware or there being a need for any kind of lateral preload. So my inclination, which might be completely the wrong thing to do, would be to elongate the other sets of bolt holes to bring the centre bearing back to square.

Re: driveshaft

In brackets you say "off center (f to r)", but don't you mean "l to r"?

I believe the centre (or center where you are lol) bearing should be set with a small amount or "pre-load", but that is in the longitudinal, rather than lateral, direction.

Re: Info re a diff intended for a 745 and other some other 7 series models

So, I think I've mostly answered my own questions... I took the back plate off and physically counted the number of teeth on both crown wheel and pinion. They were 38 and 11, giving a ratio of 3.45. And having gone through a few options in Real OEM this implies part Nos 33101210033 for non-lsd and 3...

Info re a diff intended for a 745 and other some other 7 series models

Well over 20 years ago I bought a brand new diff that a main dealership had had in stock for a number of years and was wanting rid of for very modest money - just £50, if I remember correctly! Attached to it was a label specifying the models it would fit, including the 745. Further research indicate...

Are we sure they aren't still available from BMW?

I have a full set or all four front grilles from my '88 635CSi that came off at around 70k miles, but of course these are in the UK.

Sorry if mentioned/covered already, but I've come a cross a situation where problems started occurring once everything get properly warmed through - and the cause was deteriorated rubber fuel lines that effectively collapsed once the fuel got hot ( which it will do as it's constantly flowing between...

Re: Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

Another thought/question. Do braking systems incorporate any kind of over-pressure relief valve mechanism? My thinking here is that by pressing really hard on the brake pedal (engine running) the combination of foot pressure and boost pressure (or maybe just he boost pressure) will be extremely high...

Re: Annoying Transmission Issue.

From memory (but it's a bit hazy) isn't the speed at which this problem is said to occur about the same at the speed at which it goes into gearbox "lock up"? Could this be a factor in the equation? Does the car operate perfectly normally if Sport or Manual modes are selected? In particular...

Re: Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

referring to the diagrams I posted upthread, my understanding is that the reservoirs are simply small chambers which have spring loaded pistons in them. The springs are preloaded so that the pistons can only deflect once the pressure exceeds a certain threshold. They are needed in the ABS system to...
