Power steering fluid filter

Post by SWAUS6 »

Hi All,

Been chasing a new power steering fluid filter for my car without success, part numbers 32411128167 or ...919. Power steering fluid low and old, steering getting a bit heavier and brakes not as good as they could be, so thought it time for a flush and fluid and filter replacement. Usual parts supplier (Wollothnesch) and my local BMW dealer parts dept say these filters are no longer available (NLA), and all other suppliers checked have none in stock or on apparent "back order". A search of this and other forums hasn't come up with an alternative, or if cleaning is feasible.

I was wondering what all you out there do when faced with replacing this filter when none are available?

Thanks in advance.

Shows up on Maximillian's site, so it may be available there. Of course that's US based.

Wow. Just checked my 633CSi and found that I don’t have a spring, strainer or filter. Everything circled in red I’m missing. :|. Car has no issues with power steering (whining or hard steering) but I’m concerned that this may have been installed at some point but no longer there. I’ve never flushed the hydraulic system, just topped of with ATF.

Considering at this point I’m really unsure of the history on my car, I guess I’m going to start looking for these components. Its been in the family since 1984 and I drove it as a teenager, but never had to look into maintaining until I inherited and shipped it to Hawaii.

Another thing to add to the list of “ta doos”. 🤣

If you regularly (every couple years) flush and refill the power steering system, you don't really 'need' the filter and associated parts.

That’s just it. I’ve never done maintenance on this car. I inherited it and shipped it here so finding a lot of “what the hell” within the various systems. So far I’ve replaced the struts, springs, calipers, brake lines, all hoses under hood, belts, boots, battery CPS and speed sensor, tie rod ends, thermostat with housing, temperature switch, flushed brake system, new brake fluid reservoir gaskets, front seats, fuel pump and filter….

Everytime I delve into it, there’s something else I find that’s probably never been changed. 🤣🤣

I must admit that I am enjoying myself though. Everyday there’s something new to learn.

Gonna go ahead and flush the hydraulic system though as I doubt it has ever been done and try to locate those missing parts.

Hey all,

Thanks for all your advice and experiences, ideal. I'll check out the US suppliers and if that doesn't work, the MANN Merc filter. If that doesn't fit or work ok, I'll ditch the filter and keep it clean and maintained.

Thanks again, Nathan

The E28 Gods must have been monitoring my thoughts.

I just ordered a few new filters from here:

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the ask and the supplier. Haven't checked in for while and just found your replies.

I ended up getting a couple of 32411104357 filters from Pelican Parts, which are 26 mm tall, 60 mm ID and 70 mm OD. The thing is though, when I drained the fluid from the reservoir, I found that the 'coffee percolator' filter section was missing, as was the spring clip that holds the spring down on the cap plate above the filter. My car has been without these since I've had it (2009), although it has seemed ok. I'll get all these missing parts and get it back to original. The clip was unobtainable through my usual suppliers, but I'll check again - and throuigh your E28 supplier in Holland.

Cheers, Nathan
