Early E24 Springs - H&R?

Post by BCMac »

Have any early E24 owners out there had good results with the H&R 29534-2 spring kit for the E12 5-series? Early E24 suspensions are allegedly identical to the E24 through 5-/82, so it seems like the E12 kit ought to work.

My 1982 US market 633csi springs are about done after 110k miles and 40 years. I could do without the federal ride height, that is for sure. =;

Are you sure that these are for the early E12 based chassis :-k

I checked a couple of links for that part number and I think they are for E28, although hard to tell by the random descriptions :-"

Frankly, I would be surprised if these are indeed for E12, owning an early 6er I have come to find that a lot of stuff is rapidly becoming NLA :-({|=

Have a complete coil over system for an early. It has new Eibach springs and all the hardware is new. I also have a set of Bil sport shocks that are used but compress and rebound as they should. I also have a set of struts machined for the coil overs

H&R 29534-2 is the European part number compatible withthe E28 based chassis.

Refer here for more details, including the equivalent North American part number:

Unfortunately I don't have the details for an E12 chassis sorry.

Ah, okay, that 29534-2 kit seemed too good to be true. Are all four springs different between the E12 and E28 chassis, or just the rear springs? Some of the application guides for the Ebay 29534-2 kits do mention E12 applications.. these must be in error.

Not sure that I am ready for a coil over kit.. I enjoy the car stock.. or at least will again with fresh Bilstein B6s. Hate to go through installing those along side old springs. I am going to keep digging, perhaps there is a way to have a set made..

Well yeah, it is clear that the springs are different. Not interested in going with coil overs. I'll have a set of springs made to approximate the Euro-spec items. If this works out, I'll share the details.

BMW Parts Deal.com has some springs available, but they're expensive. I generated the PNs below from RealOEM. My 633 is a 3/82 production car for the US market.

31331124004 Front 121.83 ea. 9/79-9/82

33531111550 Rear. $134.54 ea. 9/78-5/82

The fronts appear to be common to the Euro 635.. perhaps the strut perch is lower on the Euros? Euro cars sits about an inch lower of I recall. The 633's original springs are tired: The front right sits about 7/16" lower than the LF, measured from floor to the top of the wheel arch. Both rear springs have helper blocks. It'll be interesting to measure the height of each spring once they're out of the car. I'll post the OE spring part numbers here if I can locate them.

New Bilstein B6s arrived today: 34002292 F and 24008020 R. :D

'82 US version is a real mixed bag, Bert :-({|=

Motronic 1.0 or whatever the first version was, but still E12 vacuum boosted braking system, gauges and whatnot inside, good luck :-?

Yeah. But for now that Motronic 1.0 seems to be running my modified M90 real well. A real surprise as I am trying not to go 1.3

I went ahead and ordered the springs. Hopefully they are correct. The car will retain its stock ride height, but that's okay. With new springs and B6s, its handling and ride ought to be much improved. I love the car for what it is: A well preserved US market cruiser in a rare color. It will never be a euro high compression M30 or M88/3 hotrod, and that is okay. The M635 is everything the 633 is not.. I like the ying/yang aspect to owning both.
