M635CSi 152

Post by davrianmad »

Well I am the owner of a Artic Blue M635CSi 0760152. Purchase from action unseen for £22k, although there were 450 Photos to look through. It came with a valid MOT and following my purchase I drove it the 147 miles home, which became a nightmare when got dark with lights that light up the front bumper. When I arrived at auction house to collect the car we notice that the intake boot was disconnected from MAF and there was one of the vacuum covers on the throttle bodies missing, so with cable tie we fixed the intake boot and rubber figure from a glove was slipped over the vacuum leak, everything else check out so off we drove. It was at this point that I realised I had no clocks, no speedo, no rev counter, I did have a fuel gauge showing a quarter of a tank but was it accurate, and temperature gauge, service lights were all out. So after filling with fuel I had to follow my mate so as not speed, it soon became apparent that up the sunroof was far from secure and lifted at speed, the service lights started flashing and the oil leak from cam cover drops on the exhaust when you first start up. It turns out the oil is not from cam cover, I am not sure from where it collects on the water pipe that runs down the side of the head and drips onto the exhaust header.

Looks great in that one photo.

Congrats on the purchase.

What year is the car?

The oil leak sounds like it is from the cam cover (or valve cover as we say in the U.S), the M88 engine sits at quite an angle and I'm sure if the gasket needs replacement or the fasteners are not tight, gravity will cause oil to leak on the water pipe that spans the header and then drop onto the header.

If the gauges are not working, I recommend removing the cluster (not difficult) and un-plugging and then plugging the main harness plug back in, they might spring back to life.

I thought the first job I should do is sort out the headlight low beam adjustment to do that I removed the light clusters for the car, I noticed that I am missing a washer pump, lots of fittings rubber boots and headlight fittings, in place of the correct fitting they fitted 6.3mm blue spades and forced them on the back of headlights, in very close proximity to the body work, this was fire waiting to happen.

I took the headlight assembly to the bench, on the bench I started to disassemble the lights,

and removed each of lights, not easy as balls don’t come out of the caps, a missing cap seemed to be the problem for lack of aim, once apart I cleaned the headlight mounting and prepared it for paint. With the light units removed I could apply enough pressure to remove the metal caps from back of the light which I cleaned and get ready to paint.
Once I had painted the parts I reassembled the headlight unit and refitted back into the car, after dark I tried the light but I could not adjust the low beam to required height with headlight adjustable fitting, with no pipes connected and no fitting left on the units, I have since sourced some manual adjusters as the hydraulic units are NLA for RHD, if anybody knows if one of the electric headlight adjusters off another BMW fit please let me know, Hella make a lot of different units that mount in same way as E24 system.

Beautiful car - congratulations.

Look at the oil pipe that runs down from the rear of the head - it's an M88 thing. There's an O ring at the top and a gasket at the bottom - both likely culprits for your leak.

Hi...welcome to the madness.

When I first got my 635CSi, one of the headlights was cracked and several were suffering from condensation.

Like you I stripped the whole lot down and rebuilt, got all new headlights from BMW dealer and all new manual headlight adjusters, the electric/hydraulic system was not worth repairing and the headlight wash wipe was basically scrap, so never refitted it.

I know the car is not now original but is now very tidy looking and as I only use the car occassionally, preferably not in the rain variable headlight adjustment and headlight wash wipe would never be used anyway.

Hope you solve all the faults...good luck

Well I have now finished the rebuild of the front lights and I have reassemble the front end back to how it should be. I found that although I had wash wipe headlights it turns out that I have no wiring for the said items, so I have removed those and rebuilt the windscreen wiper washes back to just the windscreen. It does explain why I was missing a pump on the washer bottle. With all the front lights back in situ, I have refitted the air intake and sorted out a fixture at the top which ties the air box to the front panel which NLA so a stainless steel machine screw with penny washers, it hold the air box still and reduced the stress on the rubber pipe to MAF. I still have a look at fog lights which don’t work, gone through the fuse box replacing a number of fuses which were blown and now have the correct amp fuses in right place.

I have also been working on resolving the speedo and tachometer not working, after removing the clocks it apparent that the batteries on the SI board were toast, I have now replaced the SI board with on from Ivo Christov of https://www.e28specialist.com/, I got one that removes the SI function as that all he has in stock, replacing the board was straight forward. With the clocks reinstalled I went for test drive success in the tachometer but still no speed shown, so I will remove and test the sender unit in due course.

Since the dash is apart I wanted to investigate the poor fitment of the Blaupunkt New York radio. On removal it was clearly obvious that the wiring on this car has had some cowboy doing repairs. I will need to re wire the radio in and fit a new cage to hold the unit in place.

Ah, gotta love custom wiring ](*,)

But you have a beautiful example and are doing a great job, you'll get it sorted [-o<

And if you've read any of my posts, you already know how I feel about "chasing electrons" :-"

Took the carpets out of the boot today, the reason was to clean the boot and get the rear panel that attaches to the rear seat to be fitted properly as it was not attached at the top. Found a few items in the spare wheel well, can anyone identify these?

Refitted the rear section, and rear panel with new plastic poppers.

New stereo turned up today……

So I guess it time to wire in the the new speakers and power for the new stereo, and put the interior back. The old hifi was Blaupunkt New York SQ05 but volume has gone, was going to get it upgraded to Bluetooth and DAB but this would cost around £1500 so decided to replace, removed the amp as well now. It was wired in very strange way, one pair of speakers were wired from the amp to the controller in the dash that splits the music front and back, the rear speakers are the opposite to the front right to left.

While I had the centre console out I thought I should investigate why I have no reversing lights, I have already tested both bulbs so thought it may be switch problem, it was, but the real problem seems that wiring has been eat by the prop shaft, I have the top connector but no lower. So new connector installed, new reversing switch and fixed the wiring out of the way.

Well guys looks like I need your input, for some reason my alarm is constantly sounding, I have had to disconnect the alarm horn to silence it. As far as know the alarm was not activated as I do not have a key for lock on the rear boot panel. Can anyone help me with locating of the alarm control box?
I not been working on my M6 due to other projects, so your help will be greatly appreciated.
