Sunroof Motor Blowing Fuses

Post by passta »

My sunroof motor has been blowing fuses a ton lately, like 25% of the time I push the button it trips. I'm wondering if the motor is on its way out, here is why? I dropped the headliner to reset the sunroof position as it had gotten out of alignment when I was replacing some worn out guides on the sunroof itself, following this post mostly https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/show ... adjustment. While I was doing that the motor would get pretty hot to the touch anytime it operated, I'm wondering if that is ultimately leading to the fuse blowing? The motor seems fine, it's not making any weird noises, stops/starts fine and maintains the same speed, etc... The actual sunroof operates fine too, there is nothing binding anywhere and I can use the emergency crank if needed no issues. I'm wondering if the motor is on its way out? Is there any rebuild procedure for these, I've rebuilt wiper motor in the past, anything simliar?

Remove and lube the motor. I had the same problem, and fresh grease in the bearings (bushings, actually) cured it.

I would check for excessive draw, that's causing the fuse to blow and
the motor getting hot. If the draw is excessive, I would run the motor
with no load to see the difference. If it runs ok, there's too much
resistant in the sunroof somewhere.

If it still has too much draw, time for a rebuild or replacement.

I'll clean and rebuild the motor and see if that helps. Thanks for the replies!
