Brake Pad recommendation for early E24

Post by Klaus »

It's time to redo brakes on my 1981 E12 based E24 and I am looking for recommendations for front and rear brake pads. Looks like Juris does not offer a rear one anymore, ATE offers front and rear in semi metallic. I looked at EBC, they offer red and green. Anybody have any experience with these? Or any other recommendations? Looking for something that has a little bit more bite, but really not looking for extremely dusty.

Thanks,
Klaus

Hey Klaus, not sure if these are still available, but I've got the former Repco on mine, later marketed as PBR and/or Axxis :-"

I think they came from Oz, maybe the guys from down under can verify :-?

I haven't looked for (or needed) brake pads in a long time, but maybe it's time to put a set on the shelf :-k

I'm still waiting to hear about rotors from one outfit [-o<

If you've got nice wheels, get dustless pads, I forget where I got mine. Prior to that I had stock pads, which ruined the finish on my wheels.

I’ve used EBC ‘Greenstuff’ pads on many occasions for improved braking.

I've had the red and found them pretty wooden especially when cold. Also found it pays to do both rotors and pads at the same time

Wow, I completely forgot about this post. Anyway, I ended up with EBC Red Pads, had a problem sourcing the front ones for a couple of weeks as every order went to back order.
I have a set of drilled and slotted rotors, still waiting for a set of stainless brake hoses and some time to actually change everything out.

Thanks for all the recommendations, I will update once everything is installed.

I’ll be interested to hear how you find them. I was under the impression that red pads were more for racing applications and need to get up to temperature before they work well?

Good luck!

What's wrong with OE pads?

So if I go to a BMW main dealer I can't get rear brake pads?

EBC products in general have generally had the most dreadful reputation with both Redstuff and Greenstuff in my experience always been regarded as laughable. That said, for what they are being called upon to do they will quite likely do an adequate job.

But if sourcing anything off the shelf really becomes a problem, as long as backing plates can be supplied, I can get pads made in a wide variety of compounds.

I went with ABS for my 79 635 this summer. They work very good!
