Christmas is coming again ... IKR it was only Christmas last week but here it is again
And guess what !
I still have full sets of weatherstrips available and their good, as good as OEM ...read some of the reports in the projects thread
I know I have said this before but these are the last batch I will ever make and once they are gone ...they are gone!

So if you have cracked hard weatherstrips and would like to seal up your inner panels put them on your letter to Santa ... or maybe just message me directly, you know how busy Santa gets at this time of year if you hit the little envelope icon you can email me directly

All the best

I finally got around to installing the weather-strips I purchased from Ric.
This is my experience... I was not prompted to write this up.

My story begins with restoring my my Dads 80' Euro. Been working on it for a 2.5 years now and possibly have that much more left to completion. I saw this post and pulled the trigger on purchasing a set. The weather-strips were shipped from Australia to Southern California in about two weeks. Was not in any rush as you can see from my timeline above. The weather-strips were pricy but not otherwise available and Ric is doing the e24 community a service for his effort, and we thank you. The quality appears to be as good as OEM in terms of material, shape and size.

I am not a mechanic of any sort just average skills and abilities to easily take things apart and figure it out. The instructions I found here on installing these rubber bits was lacking, or possibly just my skill set was lacking. Anyway, nothing overly complicated but I thought I'd give a few tips on my experience. Once the window trims were removed-

In my opinion, the most difficult part of this effort was removing the original rubber weather-strip. This would be the exterior window scraper. I found the easiest way was to keep one hand firmly on then the window trim (away from the screwdriver blade) and pry apart the aluminum that was clamping the bottom of the weather-strip in place. See first pic.

Once removed, I changed my mind about the most difficult part. Cleaning up the aluminum trip. The buildup of dirt snuck underneath the rubber trim was surprising. A fine steel wool and a lot of elbow grease removed the dirt. As most of you know, the aluminum trim pieces are anodized and have gotten hazy due to age. We live with it.

Using the the woodworking adage... measure twice and cut once. Didn't want to screw this up due to the cost and possible lack of inventory. Mimic the length of what came out and you should do just fine. There are a few notches to cut out on the rear of the door piece to allow the weather-strip to fit the aluminum trim and provide access to a screw when re-assembling. Once the weather-strip is seated and in place on the aluminum trim, use a large flat blade screwdriver to seat the trim into the aluminum channel. You can actually feel it snap in and properly seat. Next I used a bench vise to re-clamp the the weather-strip. Do not over tighten the vice- just enough to keep the rubber clamped in. See second pic.

The small rubber trim took a minute to figure out. You can install it backward. I did. It didn't look right so I reversed it and moved on. Make sure the rubber snaps in place. Similar to the window scraper rubber, it snaps into a channel on the aluminum trim. See third & fourth pics. You can see where the rubber is seated and where it is not. A light pressure twist with a large blade screw driver made it a breeze.

During assembly of the rear window sections, there were a few ripples on the rubber lip on the aluminum. In other words, not laying flat. After fitting the trim to the window (without installing it yet) I noticed the pressure from the window caused the rubber lip to sit flat. Pic five.

Well, there may be no pic five. Can't seem to add more images. I also see the pic order could be backward after selecting preview. I give up with trying to figure out how to post this info.

To sum it up, not rocket science an don't force anything. Well, except prying the aluminum apart, that was difficult. I placed a piece of cardboard down to minimize the possibility of scratching the trim while working with it.

Hit me up if you have any questions and I'll help you out if I can.

Merry Christmas- Jeff

Thanks Jeff
great write up
I find using an old 1" wood chisel to release the old rubber a little gentler on the aluminium and a bit of lateral tension on the rear window rubber as you reclamp it solves the "rippling effect" although as you write it does sort itself out when fitted against the window.

Hello Ric,

Happy New Year.

Do you still have a full set available? I don’t recall if these are in poor condition on my 88 M6, will check this week.

Thank you

Max
