5 speed needed

Post by streifen »

I've got an 85 635csi in need of a replacement 265-6

Or a late model 260 with driveshaft & center tail shaft support bracket
Is there a shop on the west coast capable & experienced in rebuilding the 265-6?
Thanks from Keith

Not sure about West coast rebuilders. Go to the E9 forum, at..https://e9coupe.com/forum/, and look for sfdon. He is located in Alameda CA.If he can't do it he will tell you where to get it done

the only place that does it in the Bay Area is Pete's Gear Shop. Recent reviews have been mixed.

That's who. sfdon uses. Don is one of the top restorers of E9s in the country. He uses Pete's and if they weren't good he wouldn't be using them.

They’re capable of great work, I’m sure. I’m also personally aware of a dogleg that came back with bad gear engagement, a 260 that wasn’t done right, and a tremec that wouldn’t stay in second gear until multiple repeat visits to actually fix the issue.

The takeaway is, start with a good core and if you’re going there, be absolutely ready to take it back until it’s right.

I have one spare 265/6 left. 82 528e donor so it was not abused with high torque or HP. PM your interest.

Have you contacted La Jolla Independent? I know Metric Mechanic was doing good rebuilds on the 265s

I know Don swears by Pete's Gear for his differential rebuilds; have not discussed transmissions with him.

I've heard from two other sources I consider to be reliable that parts to rebuild these transmissions are impossible to find.

Several years ago I rented a spec e30 from Drivegear. Their main business at the time was 2002 transmission rebuilds. They told me they won't take on rebuilds of these transmission because they can't get parts. They also commented that they thought at the time that Metric Mechanic couldn't get them either.

I buy a lot of used parts from Al Taylor (bavman). For those of you who don't know him, he sells used BMW parts to fund his track time, and he is very, very good at getting the exact part you want. I bought my transmision from him (and flywheel and shift platform and pedals ...) He told me the same thing a few years ago. He commented specifically that if my transmission goes, I should plan to replace it.

Just for a heads up, Metric Mechanic will machine parts they can't get.
I know they make the shifter forks for more reliability and for
excessive friction to slow down the synchro's to prevent grinding the gears
when downshifting.

Did not know MM will make parts for their transmissions rebuilds. Explains why they still advertise them.
