85 vs 86 injectors

Post by konzelmann »

I've noticed that on some sites, the injectors listed for 1985 635 seem different than those listed for the 1986. On others there is no difference. It's a bit of a problem for me because my car is an 86 but with an 85 build date and I've noticed that sometimes I end up with the wrong parts because of that. Usually not that big of a deal, but injectors are expensive enough that I'd rather not end up with 6 injectors that don't fit.

That said, anyone know with certainty if there is any real difference between injectors for the 85 model year USA spec 635 vs the 86 model year? Everything I know tells me there should be no difference at all and any injector that fits a US spec 85 car should also fit an 86, but the parts sites coming up with different results based on the year has got me concerned.

Would like to be confident to go with:

https://www.autopartsway.ca/partlist.cf ... enum1/tabs

Being 19 pound injectors, it seems to match with what has been discussed in other threads. I think these are Bosch 0280156372. Alternatively, on fiveomotorsport, the Bosch injector listed there seems to be 0280155884. Not sure what the difference or preferable choice would be.

Autopartsway actually doesn't seem to list any injectors at all for the 1985 model year, which is concerning.

I have tried to look at the injectors I have on the car, and they do have yellow plastic, but not sure if that's a sign that I need to go in one direction or another. I obviously realize that may not be meaningful at all and that the above linked injectors might be completely compatible.

Anyone confirm that either of these injectors listed here would work? And basically confirm that there would be no difference between the 85 and 86 model year and therefore I don't have to be concerned about what my car was originally fitted with. Really don't think there would be any difference in this case, but I don't want an expensive mistake.

Thanks

Shouldn't be a difference but the smart play is to go for Mustang injectors which are plug and play Look up Witch Hunter Injectors for more info
or Fiveo Motor Sport

Yes, I had been looking at fiveomotorsport. The injectors they seem to have are the part # I referred to 0280155884,

https://www.fiveomotorsport.com/0280155 ... grade-bmw/

which actually seems the same as 0280156372. Just was wanting to be more certain that my car's year and build date wouldn't somehow cause me to be buying injectors that wouldn't work.

Seems like I have nothing to be concerned about. Sounds like those should be perfect.

What he said ^^^^^^^^
The Mustang injectors are a lot better design, particularly the spray nozzles (4 of em per injector instead of one). Much better atomization.

Hi

Had my injectors for my 86 csi tested and refurbished.
Your injectors may be fine rather then spending lots of cash.

Ronnie - who did you use for the refurb, how long did it take and how much? Was it a postal service?

After calling and talking with fiveomotorsport, they suggested I go with the gen 3 injectors - 0280155884

They said they used to sell a lot of the yellow top 'mustang' injectors, but they're old now - they only sell refurb of those. Price was almost the same anyway, so I took the new gen 3's.

These are 4 nozzle just like the mustang injectors, who knows what other improvements were made that would make them superior to the mustangs.

This might be a job that I don't actually get done until next year, but as soon as I get it done I'll come back and comment how it went and what my results are. I'm expecting a nice improvement because I suspect my car has original single nozzle injectors which are now 34 years old with 270,000km on them. I usually do a lot of my own maintenance, but recently had the car in to a reputable shop for a general 'status of my 34 year old engine' type of visit, and was told that everything looked good except injectors. I had suspected injectors should be done at some point, so I took this confirmation and now am anticipating good things when I finally get these new injectors in.

Went with new instead of any refurb kits because the thought of a little upgrade in parts was worth some money to me and injectors aren't that much anyway. $250 for 6 injectors is a small price to pay for an upgrade and another 34 years of smooth running in my opinion.

Hi Konzelmann, I hope you are OK.

Did you finally go for the 0280155884, as recommended by fiveomotorsport?

I am going through the same injector upgrade and was also comparing the Bosch 0280156372 and 0280155884. My car has the original BMW 13641706176.

Was it a simple swap from your original injectors? No modifications are needed to the connector or seals, or do we need to add washers to install the new injectors?

How was the performance improvement in your car?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help, and all the best!

Yes, I too am interested how these compare to the "Mustang" injectors, but the only real evidence would come from back-to-back tests in the same car.
