89 635csi Turn signal US vs Euro

Post by Genteel »

Hey guys!
I have a US spec 89 635csi and recently had someone hit and pop the driver side turn signal lens. After purchasing a new lens and attempting install I learned that the 89 turn signal lens is slimmer than pre 88 models, which I happened to purchase ](*,) . I am having difficulty finding one specific for 88/89 years but have come across euro specs.

So my question is if anyone can confirm if the Euro spec is the same as the US spec 89 lens or fit on a 89 front end?

Thanks everyone!

If you look on RealOEM you should be able to see part numbers for 88/89 models versus earlier or other market cars, although my initial thinking would have been that there is no difference.

Edited: looks like there is a difference of some kind between Euro and US spec cars, but very hard to tell what the difference might be.

The US style 89 lenses are not the same as Euros. The 89 models are much slimmer than the older US lenses but not as slim as the Euros.

^ Plus 1

There are 3 types, the slimmest being the Euro version, the original US "elephant ear" version, and the 88-89 world bumper version, which is between the 2 as far as how slim they are \:D/

Euro lenses can be fitted onto a US 6er, with some mods, of course

I modded a set of american lens with a belt sander to be slimmer. It worked great.

Basically, you sand down the back edge of the lens about 1/2" less. Then you taper the rear edge to the front edge. I think the taper had a bit of a curve, just match what the curve looked like originally. Sorry no pics, but it's easy to do.

Marc, doesn't that leave the lower corners dark when you turn the lights on :-k

And you also have to remove the little lower bulb and socket as well, right :-?

What I did was to remove the inner DOT reflector and lower socket, which is attached to that reflector and has to come out anyway, at that point :-"

The rest of the housing needs to be made reflective, using paint or in my case, shiny tape 8)

I taped off the leads so that they wouldn't touch, but eventually I changed out the reflectors in the front bumper surrounds for actual light asssemblies and used those leads to power those lights in the process \:D/

Here's a linky to that project, and a photo of my front Euro assemblies, alas I don't have pix of the actual process either [-(
