Re: Returning With A Neat Find: 1984 M635CSi
What I've been working on the past few weeks, turning my attention to cosmetics and lighting upgrades.
When I bought this car last year, the original front Urethane front spoiler had definitely seen better days, curb damage, paint rash, tweaked, you name it.
I bought a new Fiberglass spoiler from Classic Euro Parts last year and it was a perfect opportunity to test the fitment and use it. This new fiberglass spoiler is about 6lbs lighter than the stock Urethane one as an added bonus. I was fully prepared to have to massage the fiberglass spoiler to ft properly but to my surprise, the fit and quality was perfect...highly recommended!
At the same time:
1) Repainted the front bumper (front and back side)
2) Refinished the front grills and the ///M badge
3) Replaced the chrome trim on the front bumper as the original trim had flaking chrome
4) Upgraded the foglights and headlight to LED (again highly recommended, I can actually see at night) this included new fog lights and made brackets to flush them with the spoiler opening
5) Painted the front nose of the car and painted the bumper \ foglight brackets.
6) Removed the old very weathered rubber trunk spoiler (what I called a "wet-noodle") and replaced it with a new fiberglass M-Tech spoiler
7) Painted the door trim as well
All new Grade 8.8, 10.9 and stainless fasteners
Onto the pictures.

Re: Returning With A Neat Find: 1984 M635CSi
Happy New Year's Guys, wishing everyone the very best for 2023.
A few updates on my end.
1) I (finally) replaced the trunk \ boot badge with the correct one (correct curvature). I had to order it out of Europe from www.https://www.classiceuroparts.com/pr ... y/bmw/e24/
2) Replaced the "frozen" power antenna with one that actually works (eBay seller)
3) Installed an aluminum strut brace from Welchers (bought from their eBay store)
4) Last I was on the fence about adding these stripes which I bought from Bert a few years ago, but decided to do it. Glad I did as they flow with the car's lines.

I like the stripes!
qq - where did you source new hardware for attaching the front valence, the bumper, and the rubber strips? From what I can tell, the square-head bolts are now NLA.

Nice...I'll remember the Dr. Vinyl tip. I'm betting the patch and spray will age to unnoticeable.
As soon as mine comes home from paint I'm putting ceramic UV window film on. It took forever to get rid of the sunburned plastic smell and there's no way I want it back.
PS the 888's look great on the car

Thanks.
For the square head bolts, I made my own using a square shaped piece of stainless that I had my friend TIG weld on a stainless allen head bolt and then sanded it all flat.
Alternatively, you can take a carriage bolt and turn the round head into a square by carefully cutting the "arc" and then sanding them flat.

have you checked Grainger?
Re: Returning With A Neat Find: 1984 M635CSi
thanks! I ordered some of the ebay hardware, it should be easy to modify it. the price on that Thule stuff is outrageous!

One of my favorite elements in the periodic table is "Carbon"
Carbon Fiber Air Box installed. Bought out of Germany, 6-8-week build time, these built to order.
Purchased from:
https://www.vft-opitz.de/
Point of contact: Christian Opitz (good and attentive communication)
Tricky fit - took quite a few hours especially as I did not want to scratch the new CF airbox. I had to remove the engine mounts and jack up the engine under the oil pan, then tilt the engine to the right to provide just enough space to remove the factory aluminum box and squeeze in the new CF box, as it is quite a bit bigger than stock. Also required a small modification to the throttle cable bracket and trimming one of the coolant lines. Also requires a cone filter (I used K&N) RU-2430 and made two aluminum brackets to support the AFM. The factory air filter box will not work with this CF box.
Benefits: 13lb weight saving and more airflow to cylinders 5 and 6. I took the car for a 10-mile blast after the installation, and it drove great.

Wow, those are some fine looking carbon fiber pieces there Yasin
But from past experience, I would be weary about using K&N air filters
I ran a panel type filter in my 633 for years and recall being able to see light through it at some point
Subsequent leakdown testing revealed bad numbers on 3 cylinders, which I attribute to using this type of filter
I surmise that it was letting very small particles to pass through, resulting in ring wear
My engine still runs fine and the bottom end is original, just saying

That looks spectacular mate. Well done.
The wheel & tyre combo, the colour, the exhaust - it all looks awesome.

Bob - Curious how you determined that the engine issues were caused by using a K&N filter?GRNSHRK wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 6:07 pm Wow, those are some fine looking carbon fiber pieces there Yasin
