I spent last Thursday and Friday doing a clutch replacement job on my son-in-law's Scion FR-S, what a task, I'm getting too old for this shit
True story, he pulls into the driveway Thursday morning after a 40 mile drive, only to stall out with the car half way in the garage
He tries to fire it up but can't even get into gear, no surprise, looking at the pic of the throw out bearing
So we push it in the rest of the way, proceed with getting it up on jack stands, yada yada
We finished late Friday afternoon, he fired it up and took it out for a test drive, all good after having to remove the tranny a second time due to the flaky throw out bearing retaining system coming loose
Later I was reading the comics and saw the attached, which reminded me of how we both felt after successfully completing the job

How about this piston I removed from a non-running S1 a few years back. I ended up breaking it, but with hindsight I shouldn’t have, looking at today’s values of ‘restoration projects’

That throwout bearing reminds me of some of the "Just Rolled In" videos on YouTube. Car parts utterly destroyed due to ignorance and/or lack of maintenance.

Back in my misspent youth I had a box of broken car parts. Cluster gears with teeth knocked off, broken synchronizer rings (I was hard on transmissions) rod bearing beaten to pieces, a broken flex plate. I called it "The Misery Box". It may still be in a dark corner of my garage.

I've always wondered why we save broken parts
I really don't do that, trying to save room for useful stuff
I am keeping 2X leaking brake M/C's at the suggestion of Klaus, thinking that at some point in the future, these may become NLA and rebuilding will be the only path to getting things repaired
But let's hope not

I save the busted transmission parts to remind me it's not a good idea to rawhide a car ever time you drive it.
I kept the flex plate to remind me to thouroughly diagnose a problem before diving in with expensive results. The flex plate was in a 1970 baseline Firebird with a very much warmed over 350 V8. I bought it in 1975, and within a couple months it started a faint tic at idle, but got worse pretty quickly. It sounded like a lifter rattle. I decided to rebuild the engine. Finished the rebuild, put the engine back in, and the tic was still there. A friend who was something of a Pontiac guru took one listen and said "flex plate" ....and it was. A less than $100 part vs the over $1500 rebuild. Live and hopefully learn.
