Paint Estimate?

Post by jcburk »

I am sure this has been asked, but hopefully not in the last year or so.. Has anyone had your whole car painted? I am just wondering if $12K is in the ball park? This is glass out, trim off, from a place that specializes in BMW restorations and cheap isn't the priority, just want to know if it's reasonable.

Midwest/Ohio/Columbus/Cinci area..

Not bad from my perspective. I had an estimate 3 years ago for $20k of which $5 was materials, $10k labor and $5 for contingencies such as parts, hidden rust repairs, etc. This was on Long Island, a high cost area and it was a reputable restoration shop.

Exactly why I don't poke, prod and pop a few pimples my car has. I had paint done in '05 as I recall. A few rust bubbles have cropped up since then. And there are a few paint blisters at the various style lines where I assume final prep, disappointingly, was not up to par. For an "older respray" it still looks good. At this point in my life I'll just park further and further away from people. It's a 5 footer now. 10 footer in another 10 years and after that I won't remember what we were talking about.

My daughter is having her 1972 Buick Skylark convertible repainted here in Rockland NY full disassembly etc.
$12K and that's no top to prep and paint. Some quotes were as much as $18K.

I think $12K is a good price.

I just asked the body shop who repaired my car and he quoted around $15K for a complete repaint. I ended up doing the doors forward (accident repair) and that was close to $5K. Note I only repainted damaged portions and there was no window out or anything like that. Major prep work was hood, one fender and the nose. They blended into both doors as well. About $1,790 in supplies, the rest was labor.

$12k with glass out is about right.

I've painted two (2) E24s in the last few years so that lines up well on cost.

Had a quote here in the uk and had quoted for full trim and glass out and also some repairs to the rear arch and sill and paint. £12,000.

The 12,000 sounds reasonable. I had a top rated bmw restoration shop quote me $14,000. $8000 is paint, the rest is labor to remove all glass, trim, and interior and then reinstall. This is SF bay area so prices are usually higher here. I'm still saving for this work but will eventually have it done.

I've recently been in to a local shop to ask. They quoted me $5500 if I bring the car to them completely stripped of all exterior parts and glass removed.
