New 16" Tires on 8" Rims - very little strut clearance

Post by Broncos »

I fitted my new Michelin pilots on some BMW basket weaves and found both in the air and on the ground that I could slide a piece of corrugated cardboard between tire and strut at the tightest point but that's it which would not allow for heat/tire expansion in hot weather so my question is, how much strut clearance is desired? Perhaps 5mm spacer or more? Thanks!

I have heard some e28 owners use 5mm's. I am running 225/50/16 on 16x8 et23 tires on my series 1. I decided to run my 12mm spacers to put them at the location of my BBS RS wheels at an equivalent ET11 for a more aggressive look. I guess i didn't bother trying them without the spacers. Not critical for the rear, however.

I suggest you drive the car then pull a front wheel after a hundred miles or so. The strut will have scuff marks if there is contact during use
