Returning With A Neat Find: 1984 M635CSi
Hi Friends - Some of you may remember that I sold my restored '79 Euro on BaT back in May.
While I wasn't necessary looking for another E24, I found this '84 M635 only a few hours drive from me in Dallas. The seller was 21 years old and only owned it for 6 months. Funny to come across a car like this so randomly, he had no serious offers or interest on it (surprisingly).
Anyway we struck a deal, I flew up to Dallas on a one way ticket and drove it home averaging 80mp/h all the way...even the AC works.
I am going to take the car apart and make it really cool...similar level of effort as I did on the '79 BaT car.
I do not own the Porsche 997.1, it belongs to a good friend of mine, who came over to check out the "new" shark.
Stay tuned,

So nice to see you bought another E24!
I will carefully follow the progress you make with this car, please keep us posted. I'm very curious how the car will look after you finished.

Looks like Henna as that was a little more orange than Zinno. And Recaros of course

I thought the later E28 based M-models were delivered with M-Tech sports seats, am I wrong?

Thanks guys! I appreciate it.
The color is Henna Red as Ralph mentioned, it has an older repaint and the color deviated from the original Henna, so I plan to strip it down and repaint it this year once I get through some higher punch list priorities.
The seats are Recaro LSs, not sure how and when they were installed but I like them!
More to come.

Try to find the build sheet under the rear seat. My hunch is those are Factory Recaros. In great shape too!!

Will do Ralph - great idea to check under the driver's seat.
The driver's seat has a small area that needs a panel replaced, so it will be off to my upholster soon.
I am happy that the Recaros are in good shape, the car has 61k miles on it according to the speedo (which works)....but who knows.
The car lived in Arizona, Colorado and now Texas, so fortunately the warm dry states.

Re: Returning With A Neat Find: 1984 M635CSi
This is why previous owners and mechanics upset me. Would you believe someone epoxied the sunroof - shut!! I was told the sunroof did not work. I spent an hour or more cutting through the epoxy carefully with a sharp knife and then cleaning all the nasty stuff off, low and behold, I hit the switch and sunroof opens and closes perfectly! I figure someone epoxied it shut due to a worn seal and could not bother installing a new seal - dimwits!
Anyway a new sunroof seal will be on order soon.
You can also see in the pictures that the pain is cracking on the roof, so a repaint is in on the list.

Re: Returning With A Neat Find: 1984 M635CSi
I had some time this week to remove the underside trunk panels, re-dye them and make them look presentable again. I also installed new clips and I was able to find a complete set of replacement tools for a reasonable price, as all the tools were missing when I bought this car.
Progress will pick-up in a few weeks as I am working on my 928S4 currently and once done with that. This M635 will be the focus of my attention.

So nice to see you are already making good progress! This car will end up looking as good as your previous one, that's for sure.
Unbelievable how they glued the sun roof . Did see this before but not on a car with value.

Re: Returning With A Neat Find: 1984 M635CSi
Well I made an interesting discovery.
When I pulled off the inner trunk panels and tool kit to re-dye them, I noticed that the actual trunk panel was from a metallic brown car, so at some point maybe something fell on the original panel damaging it beyond repair or the car was involved in an incident who knows..cars have a story especially one that is creeping up on 40-years old. No biggie.
Even though the inner trunk panels covered the brown color, I wanted to do a better job of matching it....so my wife and I sanded it down, I primed and then painted it Henna..came out really sharp.

OK, I'm super impressed that you got your wife to sand the car.
Interested to seeing how this one develops! Keep the pics coming.

Heard thatI'm super impressed that you got your wife to sand the car.
Mine did assist with the new hood pad installation, as it was simply too big for me to hold and position at the same time
I too am looking forward to the progress made on this example, keep the pix coming

Re: Returning With A Neat Find: 1984 M635CSi
Thanks guys.
My wife is great and very understanding ...sympathetic to my automotive hobby and passion. She doesn't always help out, but happy to do if I need her help. Not that long ago she helped me pull and engine and trans out of another project....I need to find that picture and share it...its funny!
While I'm waiting for stuff to come back from the powder coaters, I decided to refinish my scruffy airbox that was beginning to show its age. I painted it versus powder coating or Cerakote, as I wanted to save the OEM decals and the plastic clip that secures the AFM harness.
Here are the before pictures of the airbox..quite a bulky piece:

That looks much better!
You could refresh the AFM as well with a cover (part no. 13621711292), see Bobbo's picture in this post.

Re: Returning With A Neat Find: 1984 M635CSi
Thanks Paul.
I have one of those later style AFM covers as well.
Some more work done on the car. Incl. removing the headers (that was painfully slow), getting them ceramic coated and also a bunch of engine parts powder coated.
I am replacing every rubber hose and also the water pump and a few other "catch-up" maintenance items, so now waiting for the parts to be shipped from Germany to me. Supply chain issues stemming from Covid has meant delays and more delays! Sad face.
Anyway here is a sneak peak of things to come:
I also bought a new Supersprint exhaust, which I will be modifying. And some cool period correct Centra 16" staggered wheels:

Well, its been a while and have been picking away at the car as parts trickle in.
Lots of degreasing and cleaning of the engine as well.
I have the ceramic coated headers installed with new gaskets and new studs \ copper nuts.
I also made a new heat shield, as the old one had a puncture in it from a previously collapsed engine mount.

Some of you may have already figured this out, but thought I would still share. The OEM M88 AC bracket tensioner (Part No: 64521289076) is NLA / discontinued. For only $16, and low risk, I decided to try the E30 / E34 bracket (Part No: 64551714458) and it works perfectly - 100% plug'n'play. Hope this helps. I bet this works on all M30 engines!
