bmw m635 1985

Post by bm0635 »

seeking some info, i am in australia, went for my standard drive last week, usually only about 20 k,s, drove it back into the garage, grabbed the key this weekend, as i started it there was a loud banging noise, switched off, it never actually started, cranked again and the loud noise was there, switched off without the engine starting, my son came over the next day and we decided to remove all the plugs, cranked her over just enough to find out that piston closest to the firewall had absolutly no air coming from the spark plug hole, all the rest did,the banging is still there, we think a valve has let go, if stuck open would there be a bang?, if a valve can you explain damage, i need a detailed report from you guys, i am not a mechanic,
would very much appreciate your help.

Hey Richard. Where are you based. I’m based in Melbourne.
It needs some competent diagnosis. But it don’t sounds great.
I use Arnpro in Croydon. There are experts in Sydney and Brisbane also.
Could be a dropped valve but could be something more sinister (hopefully not). There is a FB group “Aussie sharks - E24” which could help also. If there is any noise present I would not be even turning it over manually.
you can contact me direct on [email protected]

Pretty tough to diagnose from a distance, but with the limited information it sounds like you may have dropped a valve. Pull the valve cover off and see what the valve train looks like.

thanks for the replys, on saturday my son is going to put a scope down to see what it looks like, from there i will remove the rocker cover, hopefully if it is just a valve does the head have to come off, is the banging noise the piston hitting the valve?, if so can it damage the piston, if just a valve can it be repaired, without the head off, i will follow up when i take the rocker cover off

thanks
