Interior light wiring question

Post by GRNSHRK »

Gents (and ladies), I am preparing to add an additional interior light over the center console where the cover for access to the sunroof motor is, and I have run the wiring from the existing interior light (the one over the driver's side head  ) but while I can turn on the new light in the "always hot" position, it doesn't work when switched to the "door open" position :-k

Measuring voltage at the original light, I get 12V at the "always hot" lead, but nothing at the "door open" lead :-({|=

Surely I'm missing something here, maybe the lead from the door switch just sends a signal to the light and taps into the "always hot" lead when switched to the "door open" position [-o<

More to follow in another thread once I get this issue sorted [-o<

TIA 8)

Doesn't the "door open" side work by grounding the light? Maybe it's not grounding the new light? Just thinking out loud. :-"

Yes Ken, spot on =D>

I talked to Ralph and he also confirmed that the door switch just completes the ground circuit and doesn't have any power :-"

So I rewired the new switch by attaching the hot lead to one end and both grounds, one from the chassis and the other from the door switch, to the other end which has 2 connection points, and Walla, it works in both positions

Thanks gents, I hate chasing electrons :-({|=
