Wood steering wheels.

Post by Nick_from_Brooklyn »

So many options both expensive original and knock offs. Anyone care to break down differences between Mardi, momo, Alpina and some nice ones that I think are just no name retro styles. Most pricing pretty nuts.

I have a newly rewrapped black leather on the 4 spoke style, but the wood is so tempting.

380mm dia is the optimum diameter , aesthetically and for pleasure of use.
Genuine Nardi / Petri are a beautiful wheel being slim rimmed ,very tactile and just lovely to look at .
Many of the others , inc Momo , have a smaller diameter and thicker rim and just don't look right in our era of cars .
I have a very early Motolita from circa '66 which has all the attributes of a Nardi but has holes instead of a slot on the spokes . I much prefer the slot of the Nardi and aspire to get one someday but the Motolita has a very personal story so will stay with me .
It's a very personal thing really . Wood rimmed wheels are almost de rigueur on E9's but not quiet so on E24's and I have to say that I have seen many more nice leather rimmed wheels on E24's that wood .
I think if you go the wood rimmed route you have to steer ( :D ) a path away from the heavy ,thick, full fat versions you show in your post .
The right wheel will enhance the look and feel of the car and will be seen as a display of good taste , the wrong one can look graceless.
I still cry when i recall the genuine Les Leston with Porsche hub that was offered to me for £5 in a bric- a brac -shop in Luton 25 years ago . I was focused on other things at the time and passed it by. :(
Have a look at this site but be prepared to be shocked.

Thanks, yes those first 2 I linked are quite hefty looking. The previous owner had the 4 spoke reupholstered and I have a spare.

Although it may be the right wheel it's clunkier than I like. The OEM 3 spokes are nicer, but maybe that's a grass is greener situation and Im5still in the honeymoon phase with this car and acquiring more stuff for the sake of it is gratifying.

I wasn't aware of Petri but these are beautiful this leather one especially...

I still have the perfect condition original series one wheel as yours and have refitted it numerous times over the years to see if I wanted to go back but immediately found it completely removed the light and airy "feel" of the cabin that the wood rim gives.
Good luck with your choice .

Interesting take, just the opposite of my tastes :-"

I'm not a fan of wood steering wheels in 6ers because there's no other wood in the interior, as opposed to say, an E9 coupe :-k

And I also like the thicker rimmed smaller diameter wheels as well \:D/

Here's a shot of mine, Momo Monte Carlo, 350 mm diameter, I think

The bottom line is it's your car and your personal choice 8)

Looking more I don't disagree about the wood, but I do like that 3 spoke, the big 4 spoke is so frumpy. That Momo is nice!

Also not a fan of wood. i do think the Monte Carlo is the best looking wheel, but went with a Momo Retro @ 360mm for dash view and steering weight. Whatever make sure you get the right hub and spline for your car.

I have a Nardi wood wheel on my Interceptor convertible. It suits the car style IMHO. Don't think it'd suit my M635.

Only time its not so good is middle of summer and hands are hot/sweaty before AC kicks in or roof is dropped. Cheers Julian

I'm gonna try and find an Mtech1. Love the Monte Carlo but in NYC traffic having a little padding on the center not a bad idea. Already had a close call, this car is easier to miss in bumper to bumper traffic than what I'm used to, need to tone down the aggressive lane changing.

M Technic 1 NOS was sold on Bring a Trailer last year. Good money for a steering wheel!

I picked up one from eBay very similar (maybe identical) to the Mahogany Wood one you shared, but I’ve been hesitating on installing it. It’s beautiful but *technically* these aren’t period correct, right? Or am I wrong?

Not that it matters cause my Bluetooth Blauplunkt is not “period correct” either

Unless it's a 98 point concours car, why worry about it? Use what makes you happy, period-correct be hanged.

I've come to agree that the wood just doesn't go with everything else inside, in addition I'd rather my face hit something other than a steel pole in the event of even a small accident. I do have to deal with bumper to bumper traffic, hopefully these brakes keep up. However I'm now considering an Mtech wheel, around $400 online https://www.ebay.com/itm/165805060221?c ... zQQAvD_BwE

I finally got the car back last night with the new Front spoiler, pin stripe and the little details that needed fixing ie passenger lock, instrument cluster lamps, wiper pump. Will post pics in the other thread about spoilers anf finally get some good ones for the gallery. Oddly my head light problem came back last night 2 mins from the mechanic. The brights worked, driving lights worked, low beams did not. In this case the new old stock fog lights worked with the low beams switched on but no actual low beams. This went away after a day last time so I'll see what happens when I take some pics and post in a couple hours.

Nick, please note that there is a difference in the splined shaft that the steering wheel hub bolts to, the change sometime during the '85 model year :-k

I don't know for sure, but that Mtech II wheel you are looking at is likely what is called "fine spline" and will not fit your '80 :-?

You should check with the seller first, before plunking down that hard earned $400 [-o<

Will an ‘88 M6 airbag 4-spoke car accept any fine spline wheel without histrionics (e.g. MTech 1)?
