Remove door card with door closed?

Post by Mwill »

I have a 1982 633 with a drivers side door that doesn’t open

All the videos I’ve found show the door card removal start with the door OPEN. Is it possible to take off the door card with the door CLOSED, or must I first figure out how to open the door first to access the screw in the door card near the hinge?

Thank you!

I only have experience with a Series 2 sorry.
But if your S1 is anything like mine, you're not going to have a good time.
I would say it's impossible to remove the whole door card without significant damage.

You may be able to remove just the grab handle and internal door lever, which may give you more access to the internal latches and rods.
From here, you might be able to coat-hanger a solution to release whatever is preventing you from opening the door.

If that not successful, start looking for a second-hand door car to replace the one you're about to cut open.

Sounds like I can

1 — :D somehow figure out how to open the door

OR

2 — ](*,) cut open the door card and replace it with a new door card

My theory is that option 1 is feasible because when I pull the handle it “feels” locked. It doesn’t feel broken, or as if something is flimsy/engaging the lock mechanism

Which makes me think the door can be opened with a skilled (or Youtube-trained :D) locksmith and without cutting the door open?

If I were to "Locksmith-it" I could expose the passenger-side door card so I have a “map” of the lock mechanism when navigating with a slim jim-type tool . Any thoughts?

Hopefully these photos will help [-o<

The first shot is of my remote lock actuator, but you can see that it simply attaches to the existing lock mechanism and when activated, pushes the linkage up or down, depending on if you are locking or unlocking :-"

So it "may" be possible to try thee ole "slim Jim" method

The second shot shows you where all of the plastic retainers clip into the door, which should give you a very good idea where to pry, presuming you still need to remove the door card with the door still closed

I think that if you have a small right angled pry bar, you "should" be able to work your way around and remove the door card with the door still closed :-k

Of course, you will have to remove the arm rest and handle first

Nice pictures you can use in this thread. First pic has an arrow going right across a vertical rod. That rod goes from the solenoid through the lock/latch system then up through the top of the door for the visible post. Pulling up on that connection will unlock the latch. Unfortunately that bright gold colored metal rear window guide will be in your way. Good luck

Hey Ralph, with all due respect, I'm fairly certain that the inner workings of the doors between series I and series II cars is vastly different :-k

Which of course is also true of just about everything else mechanical and cosmetic between the 2

They all just sorta look alike :-"

I was able to open the door today thanks to ya’ll help =D>

I was able to finagle the middle part of the door card loose without having to remove the screw near A-pilar (which I couldn’t access due to the door being shut). Removing the middle of the door card gave me access to the door latch that wasn’t getting turned (circled in blue)

I’m still not exactly sure what’s missing or broken here, but I’ll investigate more in the next few days (maybe compare it to the passenger door)
