633csi B34 5 speed swap

Post by Rambler1963 »

Hello,
I got a 1983 BMW e24 633csi 7/83, early e28 base. The car has a three speed auto and a worn out 3.2l M30. I have a 1987 e28 535i for the donor. Complete 5 speed swap and a healthy low mile b34. My question is that the e28 has the 059 DME and my 6 has the earlier dme with separate idle control unit in the glove box.

Has anyone transferred the idle control modules wires to the dme pinout to "delete" the separate module or do I need to just swap the e28 motor harness? Cheers.

You should swap out the harness as it's not just the idle control that's different. TPS may also be different and I know that along with the ecu, the AFM and the injectors are also different. The TPS is a bigger concern as a difference there will require some wiring changes to the ecu. Good luck

I'm rolling the donor into the shop tonight. Going to pull the harness, motor, diff, pedals and whatever I can scavenge. Already got the Trans and driveline out.

Another consideration is the harness connector to the fuse box though. You may have to do some work there. E24 has blade fusebox, e28 has torpedo fuses

That is true the e24 uses blade fuses. I did notice the engine harness unplugs from the e28 junction box. I don't recall it unplugging from the e24 junction box but we'll cross that bridge when we get there. I guess the jbe could be transferred too with some work.

Getting things done!! Best time to change Rear Main Seal and Front Crank Seal. Inspect freeze plugs for corrosion. Change Input, Output and Selector Shaft Seals on trans.

Pay attention to specific installation instructions for driveshaft center bearing preload and guibo hardware orientation

Probably going to reseal everything except HG. Power wash and degrease the block. When the 6er motor comes out I'm gonna have the steering box mount welded up and detail the engine bay before putting the b34 in. New flex disc is on the list with clutch hydraulics, motor mounts, etc. Old clutch is fried and I'm looking at light weight flywheels. Seems like 533 15 pound flywheels are anice touch on a street car/daily.

So I was looking at the diff tags on the donor (87 e28 535i) and my 6er (e28 based e24). The ratio for both different are 3.25. The part number for each diff is different in ETK. Do I still need to swap the e28 different in or am I fine keeping the six diff in since they're both 3.25 ratio.

No need to change out diffs. They are identical unless one is lsd. They do go out so best to keep the spare

Spent today refreshing the b34 and ended up pulling the head.

Weird issue with the six, no start through the ignition switch (brand new from dealer). Starter starts fun power probing the blk/yl pin on the diagnostic connector. Now with the car off in position 2 if you remove the start signal black/yellow from the starter solenoid the fuel pump starts running.

Both fuel pump and starter solenoid get signals from the ignition switch and after replacing that you're having issues. That, along with no cranking would make me put the old one back in place. You don't have to install the switch into the column. Just swap at the harness connector and see if the problem persists. Turn the ignition switch with a screw driver to activate the different positions

Sorry but your issues are unusual so you'll have to troubleshoot

I've had an ignition switch actually still works when it's activated with a screw driver. The key rotation in the column did not turn enough to activate the start circuit.

I have the electric manual out. The "old" one was grenaded when I initially bought the car.
