Finally, after discussion with the BMW Classic Group in Germany,I discovered the tool is easily available from BMW in Germany. You just have to order it from a dealership. But be aware some dealerships don't want to sell you tools so you have to explain them that they are required by BMW Headquarters to sell you the tools. You have to insist. A lot of employees at the part dept. are not even aware of that...and the vast majority don't even know what an M88 engine is...They think a BMW M1 is a BMW 1M....
One last warning: Tool is uber expensive....$ 590 CAN taxes included....Tool is made by Bosch. The part number for the M88/3 engine is 83300490941

According to previous readings over the last couple of years, it seems the Baum tool is more fragile than the original BMW/Bosch one and I would not want to risk a metal fragment getting lodged inside the valve/camshaft/cylinder assembly...This is why I'm finally glad I went with the original one...

You are correct, I bought a baum 15 years ago and it broke on 1st use. I bought the dealer one as well, where are you getting shims from? I used 31mm VW on my original M635CSi
